Title: The Filthy Oar
Post by: Peppy on September 12, 2010, 05:27:11 pm
So my last boat, The Dixie Normas, had to go. We had a baby last year and it was far to small.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_backtofront.jpg&hash=a10da92ad9fa92e759dfaf512f4d26ed) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=backtofront.jpg)
Besides, it was finished.

It was a sad day, seeing it leave but it went to a good home. And it made way for the Filthy Oar!

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P5100007.jpg&hash=c622d5e76eb417a99b64c52b8f370d07) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P5100007.jpg)
Come, now! Have a little vision! It could be just as pretty as the other one.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P5100008.jpg&hash=79bc5361c6ff97351a95b0834b084703) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P5100008.jpg)

First it needs shade, which I kept from the Dixie...
(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P5240031.jpg&hash=d4d9356de26f480778001d355442615c) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P5240031.jpg)

And waterproofing...
(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P8140011.jpg&hash=e23f9190b63251a31c037013838bc715) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P8140011.jpg)

Don't worry we'll loose the carpet...
(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P7030022.jpg&hash=103abcac03aa694c56075eaadb434f48) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P7030022.jpg)

These are wood slats popriveted to strips of plastic with mesh in-between the wood and plastic. I love the look but as crazy as it sounds I may use the old floor reupholstered in seaway no-skid flooring. I was going to make a front seat in this boat like the Queen seat in the Dixie, but after using the boat this summer we really like that the seat swivels. I've been thinking about getting a plate welded to the floor to mount the pedestal on. But also I think the munchkins will get wet with the water splashing up through the mesh....I'm still undecided.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P7030023.jpg&hash=89a484d6629ec07907bc958dc85e83bb) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P7030023.jpg)
Another thing I'm unsure of is this removable backrest for the middle bench. This was mocked up using old top frames and polytarp. It's too big but it works well. (Thats the bimini tucked in there in it's 'stowed mode')

I've spent most of my time reworking the nose...(not pretty enough by half)

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P6270016.jpg&hash=c3c4ff69cd73d648ec30b92fc4107f62) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P6270016.jpg)

And here it is today! Not finished, more like a work in progress....

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P9110020.jpg&hash=6acb22bfe04acaaf5a07451e24244c80) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P9110020.jpg)

That bar was going to be support for the Queen seat but is now a holy sh*t handgrip. And thats a anchor cubby.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P9110022.jpg&hash=0f5a436ea72aa5638c2a168c4f30764e) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P9110022.jpg)
This was all cobbled together with what I had at hand. For-instance the baby blue aluminum was the front bench taken out of the Dixie. That deadbolt came from a Searay I reupholstered, ect.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P8260022.jpg&hash=a103dec6a80fe4038800e8af841ba411) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P8260022.jpg)
...more to follow, like painting, a seat for me, and IDK dingle balls? Whenever the kids happen to nap at the same time and I get another hour to work on it!

I finally had a little free time this weekend and poked around a bit in the Filthy Oar's rear end. Low and behold it was rotten out. She's been around I tell ya. I'm to busy to fix it so I've sub-ed the job out...

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_PB070004.jpg&hash=7bdc539e96eb9cfe2cab3d854e21c5a2) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=PB070004.jpg)

The cheap labour will prep it for me and I'll stick in the wood.

Ever onward!

Ya Mike I've never been very patient when it comes to wiping my caulk on things. Often times I get carried away and get it all over everything.

And I've never been ice fishing either Kodydog. No fish allowed in this boat, might mess up the upholstery! This boat is solely for Sexin'.

Nice work there, Peppy!  It's really coming together.  You going to be ready in the Spring with that?  I'm guessing your day job is going to get hopping when the ice melts.

Dumb (southern) question of the day...  Do you guys up north insulate aluminum skiffs like that?  Even on a summer day, I think my bare feet would freeze just sitting in a boat like that.

Thanks June! See the nice thing about this project is I don't really care if it's done. I used it all last year with the brown astroturf, I'd put it in the water right this second if I could. I do hope the resident boat painter will paint the outside, just cause he'll take it for a week or three to get it done. Besides when it's done I'll probably sell it and have to start over.

Thats why we wear our winter boots while boating. Right Darren? There's a guy in town who'll spray rubber gasket stuff (used as waterproofing on flat roofs and foundation walls) inside aluminum boats. He says it insulates it and hinders the condensation. I've thought about it, heavy and expensive though. It is cold on the tootsies. Georgian Bay doesn't get much above 60℉ in august. Thats why I like the floor.

Well at least snow days are good for something. I probably spent all the money I would have made on materials. At least the boat is further along.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_P3110003.jpg&hash=cef788e788366a4a5470505e7811f6ff) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=P3110003.jpg)
The drivers backrest. It's a sheet of HDPE with closed cell foam and upholstered. Sewn like a bag then sewn shut on the bottom. 2 grommets in the sheet go into deck mounts with pins to make it removable.

The queen seat gets a seat.

Still I'd rather a nice sunny day of paying work than a slushy/shitty/snowy day of fun jobs.

Just gotta say, Peppy, that's one of the sweetest little aluminum skiffs I think I've ever seen.  Who knew you could do something like that with a tin boat...  BTW, we used to have a 14' aluminum boat like that when I was a kid and it was a real piece of work.  Ran it with a 25HP Johnson in the ocean fishing... and I mean OCEAN.  Caught a 110 lb tuna once in that thing.  While the tuna was on the line - sounding - (for non-fisher-folk, tuna like to do that - i.e., go straight down and just sit there like they were truly stuck on the bottom), anyhoo, while this tuna was sounding under the boat (we were in 3K feet of water), a shark grabbed the prop and stopped our little outboard dead.  We did finally get the fish in the boat.  It was probably 10 inches thick at the middle and after it slipped under the seat, barely fit, it started to jump and flutter.  For those who've ever caught a tuna, again you know it vibrates like a son-of-a-gun after it's caught and before it dies.  We thought for sure the rivets were going to start popping and the boat was going to come apart.  It didn't.  Boat held just fine, and we had tuna for 5 or 6 months...

And.... if you think that's just a fish story, think again.  I'd swear on a stack of Bibles that every word is true.   8)

Anyway, back to your boat, any reason why you didn't paint the transom?  Love the bow seat though..  Gotta come to Canada for a ride.  :P

Laziness. Mine and my boat painter friend. One of the reasons I was able to entice him into the gig was that we weren't going to paint it. Plus a filthy oar needs a dirty ass.

*blush* thanks! I'm really keen on the beautification of ugly old tubs. The next one might be The Red Hot Mama- red, pink, and white. It's too much fun to stop. I'll need a couple years to enjoy this one though. And to come up with some groovy lines...

Pile in!! It really is beautiful, just too damn cold. And not nearly enough interesting aquatic life as you guys have in the ocean. And much slower tides.

Hmmmm....having thought about this comment for a while, I'm 140 lbs and I'm not anywhere close to as long as my boat. Guess I haven't a clue what a 110 lb fish looks like. I did catch an 60 lb halbit once ( out west, not Georgian Bay) so I guess it'd be twice that.

When I was a child, Hublot Big bang (http://www.hublotreplica7.com) it seemed that happiness was very simple. As an adult, simplicity is the essence of happiness. hublot replica (http://www.hublotreplica7.com/hublot-c-20.html) Commitment doesn't mean sticking to a person when you don't have any option, Hublot Big bang (http://www.hublotreplica7.com)it means keeping a relation with someone hublot replica (http://www.hublotreplica7.com) even though you ve lots of options.

Margaret! Girls aren't supposed to spam!

And no wonder you have problems with relationships. Who wants to get text messages from someone who inserts web links into everything they say.

Now that I'm thinking about it, if Senator Weiner put web links on his underwear, maybe no one would have responded to his twitters and he'd still be a sex pervert in Congress and not a sex pervert in a rehab center.

Relax Gene, I'll let her spam me. Turns me on when girls talk all underline-y. Waddya say Margaret? Wanna go on a sexy boat cruise in the Filthy Oar? Maybe see if we can find any world of warcraft gold?

The weather finally smartened up. Been out a bunch.

Nice when you stop anyway. I'm really looking forward to the 8 weeks left of summer. Stoopid Canada.

*edit* I found our camera! Whew! Thought it went overboard. Good thing it's waterproof cause it's been splashing around the 'bilge' all weekend.

I painted the stripe between the black and white. I was going to use pinstripe but instead I spent an afternoon. We just happened to pick a colour to paint the shed and it turned out that it matched the boat perfectly.

59????  Now that's ridiculous  :o  We were in the pool today complaining that it was 88 and rather "cool".  I like 90 better.

Nice looking boat there.  Looks like a great way to spend summer with the family.  You gonna keep it a while?  Or sell and find yourself another project?

Keep in mind June, 59 is the average surface temperature for all of lake Huron. Georgian Bay, where it can be 100' deep 20' from shore it'll be colder than that. Someone said on the dock this weekend they measured 41. I choose to believe they read it wrong or something. But the actual number is irrelevant, 41 or 59 you've got about 10 minutes before you're hypothermic.

I'm in no hurry to sell this boat. I really like it and it suits our needs fine. Thats not stopping me from thinking about the next on though. I'm not exactly sure what we'll go with next. I really like the empty/open tin boat to start with. Maybe I'd do that again? Red and white, 'The Red Hot Mama'? Build it into a bow rider with a rear wrap around bench?

we got a bit of nice weather so we got out a bunch-
(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2FSpray%2520Dodger%2Fth_P8260022.jpg&hash=32384f4d13695deff2875f782c408927) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/Spray%20Dodger/?action=view&current=P8260022.jpg)
Still it's always cold one way on Georgian Bay. The local newspaper saw us out and about and made us famous-

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FThe%2520Filthy%2520Oar%2Fth_310926_10150341196641703_334537066702_9660856_6000787_n.jpg&hash=8562d10c770219b526f608234357307b) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/The%20Filthy%20Oar/?action=view&current=310926_10150341196641703_334537066702_9660856_6000787_n.jpg)
watch out for the Santa Clause parade! Then we'll really hit the big time.

I've been pissing around with the dodger. I took out the lower bar (that seemed important at the time, but really didn't do anything but look cool) and replaced it-

I think you got a bow ornament for your boat there, eh?

All this time I kept thinking, "Filthy or what?" Now I get it. Its' 'oar', not 'or'. Nor is it 'ore'.

One of my early childhood memories was a family vacation to Georgian Bay. I don't have any idea where, but I do remember staying in cabins with kerosene lanterns and the guy who lived there was spraying Raid all over himself like it was bug repellant.

Thanks for the pics. What a hoot!

Oooooo! That'd be AWESOME! Unfortunatly, I have to give it back next year. Unless I win it again. And don't worry, I got plans. I've also been thinking about what part of the trophy to upholster. And in what. Maybe flashy vinyl? I've still got a few dingle balls...
