I don't have any info on this object, a guy I know showed me it a few months ago and he had no idea to its purpose.
Any ideas?

Pocket watch protecter, maybe? You could still see the time through the holes.
Either that, or a prop from a Harry Potter movie.
Need to lay a ruler beside it for size comparison.
Any markings on it?
I'm guessing but it looks like something a compass would fit into.
I've never seen anything like it.
Jim
Some kind of chastity belt attachment..... ;D

We meet in the marina car park and had nothing to place alongside for comparison when taking the pic on my mobile. In hindsight I suppose I could've placed it in the palm of my hand...
From memory, I would say it was about 2.5" dia.
The only markings is a number '25' that can be seen in the 2nd & 3rd image when viewing at 100%.
Do you know where they got it from? It's definitely a conversation piece!
How about some type of bottle opener? You would pull the chain to cinch it tight around a bottle cap, and then yank upward to pull cap off.
Mousetrap. OK, I go along with the fob idea or an end cap on some kind of storage tube or drain pipe.
Moyers use it at a Bris. They can do 5 baby boys at one time.

PS: just a guess?!?
Is there any residue or burn marks inside? It reminds me of the thing you see the catholics burning incense in in the movies.
Not that I can remember.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
This is not my guess, but it could be right. Hey, probably a coincidence here?
You put a round colored glass 'lense' on one side and by pulling the chains this keeps it in place. The 5 holes allow light to shine through the glass. There was probably different colored pieces of round glass.
A decorative folk art item.

This sounds the best to me. It might be only the lid and have a brass "bottle" that is held in place by the round clamps. "Insenser" is what they are called.

Why not carry it to a Catholic church and ask?
I would be inclined to say part of an insenser - the ones I remember had a considerably longer chain, allowing the priest to swing the ball and diffuse the smoke over a greater area. The insense is granular and is spooned into the ball -- funny, I don't ever remember seeing it get 'lit' so there must have been a small coal already burning.
