Title: Rotary Cutters
Post by: Chuck D on March 23, 2011, 05:54:48 pm
I remember the calouses my dad had on his hands from using shears......in fact I have a couple myself. I have been using a rotary cutter for a couple years now but as of now I still sharpen my blades with a rig I made and use with a hand drill. Does any one know of a sharpener for 60mm rotary blades? One that's not made of plastic and made to last.

I thought the sharpeners were built into the machine. If not, couldn't you use a sharpening stone held to the blade while it's spinning without removing it?

cardboard grinding wheels work great on knife blades. Might look into them, they attach to your grinding motor.

Your talking about a hand held push cutter right? The only one I know of is the cheap plastic sharpener.

All the cutters I can think of are self sharpening.  That doesn't mean that someone removed the self sharpener along the way somewhere, or never installed from the begining.

Sorry, I didn't clarify that I was referring to a hand held rotary cutter. My bad.

I use a 60mm Olfa cutter all the time.  For cutting out material and vinyl, I'd rather use it than my shears.  I bought this cutter.  http://www.usasharpeners.com/

It works for 45 and 60mm blades.  So far I've only used it one time.  I didn't get the cutters razor sharp like new, so I've just been putting in new blades since I bought a bunch pretty cheap on eBay.

I've been saving the dull blades and will give it another shot later.  I think it'll work, I just need to spend a little time playing with it.
