Title: Moray Fabric
Post by: kodydog on March 10, 2018, 07:02:43 am
Just got the go ahead on 10 dining chairs. The chairs seats are 27" wide.

This is a new customer and she is working with a flamboyant male decorator.

The fabric is something I've never seen before. It is a chenille type fabric that resembles Moray eel. When you view it from different angles it changes color. It runs up the bolt. The fabric color is mostly royal blue with a silver "spine" that repeats across the bolt. The first spine starts 10 inches in and repeats every 10 inches.

They want a spine to run down the center of each seat. To cut the fabric I will have to center the seat 20" into the bolt. This will put the edge of the cut at 34". These seats cannot be cut side by side. When we pointed out the waist the customer was concerned. The flamboyant decorator called the supplier and ordered 7 yards at $200/yd.

I'd probably be retired by now if I could've just learned to act more flamboyant.

Remember Anna Nicole's TV show? She had that flamboyant designer named Gary Trendy. I thought about changing my name to Dennis Trendy, and propping my arm on my hip a lot. I bet I would've had all the female customers just shoving money at me.

Kody that sounds, uh, a bit frightening. 200/yd??
I would really like to see an image of that.

And flamboyant is good. Everyone is always drawn to animated people. But most in my experience are not. It would be exhausting to fake.

I bet the flamboyant decorator is not so forthcoming with your hourly rate, wonder what sort of mark up he takes out of that $200.

I have been tempted to do the same thing. Rose thinks otherwise.

$200/yd was wholesale. We learned later he did not mark up the fabric. We were standing right there when he placed the order. He used the customers credit card to do it. I know, weird.

I know, this is also weird. We are charging the customer. He dose not mark up our price. I guess he charges a rate for his service.

Use to be we could quote several different quotes with one post. (I hope that makes sense) That option appears to be no longer available.

I guess that idea never occurred to me. Just order everything on the customer's credit card. Guess it would simplify my tax returns.

Sounds to me - and maybe not politically correct - the designer is more gorgeous than the fabric.  Ed I would suggest you invite the designer over (hide the rulers)  break out that special tank top you've been saving for a special occasion, and show him how to lay out a pattern the way the ol boys do it - Southern Style !

We received the fabric today. I was able to take a better look at it. When you rub it one way it feels like suede. When you rub it the other way it feels like vinyl. It has a cloth back. Bares the Kravet label. Rose told him to order 7 yds, he ordered 8. This photo doesn't do it justice.

Kravet - that explains it. The preferred fabric choice of designers in my area.

Looking forward to seeing the finish product so we can see what it looks like with light hitting it at many angles.

It looks like sea ray skin or shagreen pattern.
I know that stuff is expensive.  Kravet sent me 7 yards to fix a table I only needed 1/2 yard.  Mine is green - waiting for a use to use it.
My Mrs. doesn't like it so it sits here in a tube with no purpose.

Yes, Rose informed me the pattern is manta ray. Not moray.

The blue is perfect for UF Gators orange and blue. Is there a big difference between gator hide and manta ray hide? Add an orange welt and makes a great toss pillow for a gator fan.

Okay so now the "flamboyant male decorator" wants us to make a pillow/cushion in the shape of a ball. You know, to toss around. He wants to use Mohair. The problem is how do you make a pattern for a basketball shaped pillow? Rose told him if he can find one we can use for a pattern we will give it a shot. We are too busy to look for one.

Borrow a basketball from your local school/kid down the street. wrap it in masking tape and mark the seams. Carefully cut and remove the tape and stick the sections to pieces of brown paper. Add your seam allowance and presto---there is your pattern.

We have a ton of kids in this neighborhood. We were walking the dogs last night and spied a basketball in a neighbors driveway. Hmm. Thanks for the suggestion Darren, I will consider it.

Now that a great trick.

After a long hiatus I was finally able to go kayak fishing today. During my floating adventure I found a rubber basketball. I found a place on shore where I could toss it and come back later to retrieve it. Later I presented Darren's cleaver pattern process to Rose and told her where the basket ball was located. She told me in no uncertain terms that we will not be making a basketball shaped pillow. :(

The good news is I caught a 14" Red Fish. First Red Fish I've landed from the kayak. Bad news is Florida regulation says minimum size for Red Fish is 18". Damn that was a good looking fish.

I've been rather fond of Rose ---until now [pout]. why does she not want to do this? I think it would be kinda cool.

What the heck Rose?! You're letting down the whole upholstery forum. Geesh.

I no longer have the web site, but if you google you might find it. It showed patterns and angles for all types of shapes. Balls, cones, squares, etc. All you needed to do was add for your seam allowance.

I made a round fabric cone pillow, like a big Hershey's Kiss. I printed out the pattern, enlarging it to the size I wanted, then added seam allowance and sewed it together. Then I took it apart, checked everything, sewed it together, took it apart, checked again, then sewed it together for a perfect cone pillow. Easy, right?

Kool on the red fish. It's amazing how much it helps the fish population when we have regulations for throwing back some of the smaller fish.

Yep! It was very tempting to keep it but the fine for size-limit fishing violation in Florida is a second-degree misdemeanor carrying a maximum penalty of 60 days in jail and $500 fine per violation

Many years ago now, there were several high profile cases in West Virginia where people were being followed by strangers and then assaulted. West Virginia passed legislation putting severe penalties for stalking. The governor gave a press announcement saying he was passing legislation to halt all stalking. The governors office got hundreds of complaints from concerned citizens saying that if this law went into effect all the lakes would run out of fish. True story.

I've been pondering this all day and cannot figure what stalking has to do with lakes running out of fish. I know there is a logical answer but it must be hanging up there just out of my reach.

The point being made here is; take away the constraints and restrictions on fishing, then the lakes would run out of
fish.

This thread has a good mix of ideas/points being made, so takes/understanding is like upholstering -
meaning not always easy to understand by all.

Anyway, hope the ball cover idea works for any who try it and fishing is satisfying.

When you have to explain a joke, it usually isn't funny. Maybe this time it will be different. Here's to a chuckle and not a groan.

The governor of WV announced that they were passing a law to make it illegal to stalk."Stalk" is the key word to the joke.

What do state Natural Wild Life Services do to lakes to keep the fish population at a healthy level? They, wait for it, ready? They "stock" the lakes. Many fisher persons heard the governor saying it would be illegal to stock lakes, hense, those that could write wrote letters to the state capital. Those that could not write had someone else write for them and they made their mark at the bottom of all that chicken scratching.

Maybe if I told the joke with a West Virginia accent it would have been a bit clearer.

Ha! Got it. Next time I go fishing in the trout streams of Georgia I'll be thinking of you and your joke, Gene. Yes really. No not really.
