Title: Cornice vs Valance Question
Post by: baileyuph on December 05, 2014, 05:46:58 pm
In speaking, do you consider the two essentially the same?

I just read a document and am left understanding that they are not the same.

Designer's ...........how do they - or are they taught to understand the same or different?

Not a big deal but did make a note of how the two were referenced differently.

IDK, I always thought a cornice was hard and a valance was soft.

Me too.

A valance is a soft window treatment (fabric and lining). A cornice is a rigid window treatment (fabric over a solid surface).

I found this guys youtube videos. He shows how he makes both. I do my cornice boards a bit different in some of the minor details, but as long as they look awesome...

What you say is the information I read.

It was interesting to learn that sometimes either is built in a room and not over a window.  But the soft and hard comparison is understandable.
