Title: Help me identify mystery die?
Post by: Dede on October 15, 2014, 04:04:25 pm
Customer sent me a photo from a huge haul o' button stuff.  This was part of it.  They're... hand sets, maybe?  For... ?

They would go in a Defiance machine, if they even goe in a machine.  Help?  What are they?

Hard to tell from the small pic but they look like grommet dies.

Don't know why the image is so small and I'm having trouble attaching a larger one.  See if you can view this:

Ordinary grommet punch sets:

Sorry if my hands are in the way. I didn't have anyone to hold the camera.

Right click on the tiny picture and then click "View Image" and it will give you a big picture.

Paul is correct: grommet dies.

The top one is a complete set with the hollow tool used to punch a hole in the fabric, the phallic tool to be used with the metal round hockey puck type thingy to punch the two parts of the grommet together.

The lower box is missing the hollow tool.

Paul... THANK YOU!  You are the Instructional Video Master!  Thank you so much for setting that up!

Gene, I initially thought it was a grommet hand set, but the concave surface threw me off.  I mean, they're supposed to be shaped to accommodate the grommet, but they appeared a little too rounded.

Maybe it's just the angle of the camera?  Anyway, thank you both for your help. (https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.planetsmilies.com%2Fsmilies%2Fhappy%2Fhappy0024.gif&hash=2676e23bfdbe6480510ecb469087375e)

Your pic only shows the bottom side of the piece that Gene describes as a hockey puck (I think Gene only posted so he could work in the word "phallic").

Here is the top working surface:

That's it!  Your photo is taken at a much better angle, plus the whole right-side up thing.

Yes, because "phallic" is part of every good upholsterer's everyday vocabulary. (https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.planetsmilies.com%2Fsmilies%2Fhappy%2Fhappy0035.gif&hash=f077f5ac00104d5714a0cdd75522691f)

Well I did notice he was quick to use the word, "phallic," but stumbled around the "metal round hockey puck type thingy"

Am I sensing a bit of "grommet die" envy?  :)
