Post by: Mojo on September 18, 2014, 06:17:09 pm
I was wondering ( and curious ), do any of you have any hobbies outside of your businesses ?

Here is one of mine:

I have been a musician since age 8 and my wife and I still play. The photos are of our home studio. I play guitar, drums, blues harp and bass. My wife is multi talented and plays the fiddle, guitar, sax, clarinet, piano, bass and mandolin.

What are your hobbies / passions ?

That's quite a Studio Chris! You could earn playing at affairs on the weekends - you probably do !
Are you a blues musician ?
I'm boring - my hobby is my woodworking which is my job - so a warped sense of passion.
The rest of my time is keeping up with home chores but a beer makes that tolerable -

Mike - I wouldn't mind tagging along come this January -

Nice set up Chris. My wife could spend hours in that room. She has a Guild Classic guitar she plays whenever she gets a chance. My hobby is camping and kayak fishing. Caught a nice red fish Labor Day at Favor-Dykes state park.

LOL, I played violin through 10th grade.  Got tired of lugging that thing around.

Love listening to rock/blues based tunes.   My main hobby is quilting but that often times get preempted by whatever job I'm behind on.  I also love to sew doll's clothing.  My mother told me shortly before she died that she absolutely hated sewing doll clothes for my collection because of the 1/4" seams.  Since quilting also uses 1/4" seams, I don't mind the seams at all and just love creating pretty much any size of doll clothes.

The first time I ever performed on stage was when I was 8. I did a set with my brothers 1960's band playing drums. A couple years later I switched to guitar and played 60's rock and then country. I started playing blues harp in the 70's and then joined a blues band playing guitar, harp and singing. My last time on stage was in 1986 where I was called up to play harp with a Detroit blues band. That was awesome as they were a well known Mid West blues band.

I play blues, country and rock now and every now and then play bluegrass or jazz and accompany my wife when she plays her fiddle. My wife loves playing jazz fiddle and I love this type of music.

My passion is playing but my hobby is collecting guitars and instruments. It gets expensive when you have a wife who is multi talented and can play so many different instruments.

I just started something a month ago. I put a guitar hanger on the wall of my shop and have a guitar hanging there. I will hear a certain song on the stereo and will stop, grab the guitar and take a break and play. I figured I had to have some kind of fun in my shop and music is ALWAYS playing in the shop and house. :)

I ride bicycles..I build bicycles, I build wheels.  I've ridden across, around, up or down about half the country.  The purpose of my big solo trip is that I will take my father's ashes to his boyhood home.  On a bike.  (I'll pack him good and dry).  I'll journal about the trip from his perspective...we are Hill Country Texans, so there is that humor...
My husband and I got married on a bike trip in Florida.

We ride recumbents (because they're comfortable) however I've gotten back in to the diamond frames more lately.

We are on what's called the Southern Tier, and host touring cyclists...I have between one and three hundred guests a year...Great conversations, and they are all great people.

Perry:

That is very cool. The Suncoast trail which runs right next to the Suncoast parkway is a paved bike trail that runs ( I believe ) for 45 miles. It is about 200 ft from my front yard. We keep a path from the street to the trail mowed for the bikers, walkers and joggers. The trail gets real busy on weekends.

I see your bicyclists all the time down here. That is very cool opening your home to tour riders like that. :)

Wilderness canoeing. It's the only hobby/passion that I have consistently done throughout my adult life. I took my son out for his first time when he was 9. I've been out more times by myself than with my son or a friend.

I think it would be awesome if I were out on a trip by myself at a very advanced age, maybe 98, and I layed down one afternoon at my camp site to take a nap, and the good Lord took my soul away, and my body fed the bears, wolves, and other sundry creatures of the woods. I think that would trump dying in a nursing home.

My MIL is currently in a nursing home.  My mother passed in the same nursing home.  I hate that place and I try very hard not to hate but I can't help myself.  Nothing against the nursing home.  They do their jobs.  But most people are there to die and they know it.  Probably half of the residents have NO family that visits them.  That just tears me up.  Bob & I joke around with all of the residents.  I keep a small sack of candy in my purse for the nights that we visit.  There are about 6 older ladies that come zipping up in their wheel chairs as they know Bob will have a couple of pieces of candy for them.  A very small thing to do but it appears to make their day.  That and that we stop to visit and I always take their hand while we talk so they get some human contact.  They are all very cool ladies but with no visitors.  So that is why I hate that place.  Those people make me so sad.

So, I am with you Gene.  That sounds like a great way to die.  I hope that I am at my sewing machine as that is when I am happiest.

Back to happier things and favorite pass times.

My passion is woodworking.   Been doing it since I was a kid and quite seriously since the early '80s when I finally settled down to a house.  It's the reason I left software engineering to get into furniture repair work.   Also due to my upbringing, I enjoy gardening (I always say that I grew up on the business end of a hoe).

We got a travel trailer last year after an absence since the mid-'90s.   We've only been out a couple of times this year due to schedule but we are planning a couple of fall camping trips.

Surfing is my passion, been doing it for 46 years. In my younger years I lost countless jobs and girlfriend because I had to choose between them and surfing, basically I'm a stick dog and could possibly be more of a mental health issue than a passion. :)

S'pose my caravan could be called a passion now, mainly cause it is a big part of going on a surf trip.

I haven't done anything in years. Too busy---too broke---boring by yourself---blah blah blah. The weather here (after a terrible summer) is unreal !!! high 70's/low 80's since noon Saturday and sunny. Motorhome is now plated so went camping this past weekend.

I got tied up with a few errands Thursday so was hurrying to get ready and away Friday night. Half way home from work I remembered my tackle box was in the shed I borrow at work. [shrug] stroke fishing. Busy enough giving myself a lecture that I overshot my hunting license issuer (5 block back track), so now running late. Over filled the fresh water tank (as much water in the compartment as the tank ---need to re route vent hose) trying to get just one more thing done as it filled. Finally got to the lake at 10-ish. Apparently it had rained up there. I tried unsuccessfully to drive downhill onto a couple of 2X8 blocks to level the unit---they just slid around, so I opted to just make a 90 deg. left turn in between some poplars once I heard the "neighbours" grumbling to be level enough till morning. There was 8" of a 10" spike in the one tree I was sneaking around so I opened up a foot long gash in the side of 'er---special!!I could not get the water heater to light, got cross and went to bed. The ensuing rain let up around 11 so I  moved her over and tried lighting the heater again to no success----Apparently, the water I saw coming out of the belly of the unit was not just the extra in the compartment (stop cock with broken handle in wrong position) and water heaters will light them selves if you have your headphones on sitting on the other side of the unit enjoying the view. Mine has a habit of occasionally popping the pressure relieve valve. I went for a short drive (gas gauge had flaked out) for potable water, upland game, and a visit with Mom's cousin in the area. The chap that gave me the jug of really bad well water mentioned that there were very few birds and that Betty and Jerry were at a wedding out of town.

I was a little bitter Sunday, hung over Monday----AND I'M GOING SOUTH OF TOWN THIS WEEKEND!!!--- If my chores are done and I can afford it.

I like boating and fishing, but still, in spite of my everyday activities, enjoy sewing.  The creative outlet is very satisfying.  Other than that, I love gardening.  I'm currently into hybrid hibiscus.  They're high-maintenance compared to garden variety hibiscus, but gorgeous when they're happy.

I like to get out & play on the motorbike.
Passion, mountain hiking in the summer when we can get away to cooler climes. Sailing given the chance, which is pretty rare these days.

Hobbies, trying to grow my own vegetables it's a bit of a challenge with the summer heat & the strong winds we get here.
Like June I do actually like sewing but enjoy doing anything other than paid work, little bits & bobs so I don't get bored :-)  Love playing with the embroidery machine but it's soooo time consuming.
Just dusted off the pushbike so that might be a new one as the weather cools off.

My hobby in windsurfing.  I've been actively doing it since 1991 and average getting out about 80 days a year.  I'm a retired architect, and I repair windsurfing sails and kiteboard kites  to raise a few dollars to keep myself in good equipment.  When weather doesn't support windsurfing (light winds or too cold) my wife and I travel with our travel trailer, sometimes being out as much as a month at a time.  We were in Washington DC visiting the Smithsonian's on 9/11.  We got to be BBQ judges in Las Vegas for the World BBQ Cookoff Championship in 2004.  We pulled the trailer over to New Orleans and volunteered to help cleanup the schools for the return of kids after Katrina.  We've been to many festivals including the Wine festivals in Sonoma/Napa Valley, the Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, the Indian Market Days Festival in Santa Fe, and the Air Races in Reno.  We're going to keep going 'til our knees give out.

Bob T,

I read a book about 10 years ago. I think it was written in the early 90's. It started with a guy telling about how he windsurfed across Tampa Bay during hurricane type winds. He then made a list of 10 or so extreme sports that he spend the next decade or so actually doing. And he wrote a book about it. Deep skin diving (really deep with nitro tanks and such), the Kamikaze bike race in California where you ride a bike in the summer down a black diamond sky run, an ultra distance run, etc. This was his bucket list before anyone knew what a bucket list was.

I tried to find the book in my house and then online, but to no avail. I can't remember the name of the book or the name of the guy who wrote it. Any chance that you once windsurfed across Tampa bay during hurricane type winds?

I'd love to find that book to read again.

Hi Gene,  Sorry, but I've not heard of the book, but I like the guy's focus.  I have to admit I'm an adrenaline junkie when it comes to windsurfing.  I love it when it blows!  With winds in the upper 30's with gusts to 50, I seem to come into my own element.  At 66 years old, I have to reign in my passions because to takes too long to heal!

Two years ago we were in the UP of Michigan, on Lake Superior. We had walked out onto a long concrete pier to watch the sun set and to watch a storm making it's way toward us.

A US Coast Guard ship came out of a harbor into the open Lake Superior. It bounced around in massive waves and wind for 10 minutes, then headed back into the harbor. We were starting to wonder about our safety standing on this massive concrete pier.

A young man was out in the water on a surf board. Absolutely nuts! Several times I thought the wind took him out to sea, but then he would come 'flying' back toward shore. He ended his fun just as the sun was setting. My knees were aching and my back was straining just watching him. Pretty awesome!

I saw that thread Mike - you titled it "for the boaters" or something like that.  And I see it's gone.  ???  It wasn't really off-topic - it was about your flip-down t-top extension (which I think is really kool, especially on those CC's with teeny little t-tops).

QuoteLake Supe. can get nasty. Ask the crew of the Edmond Fitzgerald.

Darren, I can't. They're all dead. The history of the Edmond Fitzgerald is fascinating. The captain was blamed for leaving water tight doors open. That's the only way that ship could have disappeared so fast. Many years later when submersibles were designed that could go down to the bottom of Lake Superior, they saw that the ship had broken in two. Loaded with iron ore, it probably was lifted up from the center of the ship by a wave and the weight literally broke the ship in two. All the water tight doors were secured, by the way.

Can anyone read the words "Edmond Fitzgerald", and not have the song by Gordon Lightfoot start playing in your head?

Lake Superior can go from calm to gale for winds in 20 minutes.

Wear a life preserver in case you go in the water. This helps S&R to find your body easier.

Out on Isle Royal a few years ago, I was talking to a captain of a US Coast Guard vessel that had just docked there. We were talking about Lake Superior weather. His ship is designed to roll upside down and then to right itself. He pointed to the antenna on top of his ship. He said the tip of that antenna is 30 feet above the water and two weeks earlier out on Lake Superior he had waves breaking above the antenna.

Lake Superior: Unsalted and shark free.

Any time I hear "Edmond Fitzgerald", I  think of ALL Gordon Lightfoot songs. And then for some reason, my mind automatically drifts over to Harry Chapin songs.

So if you mention "Edmond Fitzgerald", within a couple of minutes I'm humming "Cat's in the Cradle". Or that damn song where the Taxi driver meets his old flame.

Ditto on Gordon Lightfoot in conjunction with Edmond Fitzgerald.

Worse than the Taxi Driver song is the second Taxi Driver song.  In that song, they meet up again, she's left her husband, they do the nasty and he cries.  UGH.  Same music, just different verses.  I'm not a big fan of the first and the second is absolutely horrendous.

Love "Edmond Fitzgerald" BTW and a lot of GL.  Have both of his greatest albums, err CD's and they're great!
