I don't know a whole lot about sewing machine repair but whenever I have a problem like this its usually something simple like lint buildup. Give it a good cleaning, Make sure there are no extra threads wrapped around the bobbin mechanism, check to make sure its threaded properly and give it a good oiling.

I operate a Consew 226 at work most of the time and it can be fussy if I don't press the reverse lever all the way down. Just sayin'.

Had some more ideas, if the needle is bent or has a bur it can mess up the stitch. Some fabrics like micro-fiber can also be fussy with the stitch.
