Good morning everyone, For you all that have or want an E-Z die cutter plier for turn fasteners or lift the dot types. (me my arms raised I want one)
Do you use your other tools you used prior to this purchase back at the shop or work area, I am seeing several types and choices to consider and weather I will use them much if others are purchased. The setter tool looks pretty handy if you have a place to hammer, this along with the hand punch cutters both types at a proper use location. That seems tough on a boat so I wanted to hear from you all that have been doing this for quite sometime in different settings. They say there is no wrong question so can I get some input here, the price of dies, pliers, hole punch size, Im just talking fastener stuff and its enough to uh whatever. Thanks
Good day
Press and snap is the best tool for this. Portable and extremely well built.
Thanks on the tip there I will be ordering one, I do have some snaps on order from another source. I have been looking over and over the different dies and did plan to pic up a handy grommet die for the press n snap at the same time. As I looked only the smaller has option for the spur die, so I will look elsewhere or consider regular. Just thought it would be handy on 3/8 and a bit tougher weather needed or not I was thinking HD. I have been digging through the search for related items and they are very helpful. Heck I have even been learning, now just to remember. Do you all feel there are grommet size priorities I need to focus on around the smaller boat docks and maybe some ag areas.
I always used #1 spur grommets for t-tops and #3 spur grommets for the center pole of mooring poles on covers, though I prefer snaps to grommets on covers. Snaps always seemed less likely to separate and have the cover collect water. Though, if it did, with a grommet installed, you have a built-in drain hole.
June
Thank you very much for the help, a press n snap and #3, spur and an ez are in the mail. And as I take everything on here seriously in learning, I enjoy it mostly because its brings a laugh now and then. I hope I didn't take that wrong June but cracked up on the drain grommet, I will check around for a grommet gutter. Believe me I had to dig up more than one jar for snaps n turns fasteners and now bit more aware of the road ahead. Thanks
I edited my post above this morning because I made a change order with the grommet dies, I had ordered last evening and just made it before shipping. I think at location or 40 miles around the lake if I just keep a #1 spur for the press n snap for lacing kinda stuff, then having a portable #3 spur this might work out. IM not considering an actual mobile operation though.
I would appreciate any ideas from you all, thanks
A bench mounted press of some sort I really think is going to be needed, are there some you might lean towards. Considering the dies you all have used in your types of projects, I should add for future needs as what ever might be a couple steps up.
The press and snap has a bench mount that is optional. I have never used it but it is available. I think there are dies for just about any grommet, snap etc.

there is a big bulky tool that is susposed to crimp them on also but I just stick the prongs of the grommet in the fabric and fit the washer and bend the prongs down with a flat tool like a screwdriver I like a little curved flat bar tool I have
That looks like one Mike, that is like so many other special crimpers they are proud of them because they are handy. I know that ltd or turn eyelets are not on every boat and other items but from the sound and searches on here its a pretty nice tool. Maybe a week for delivery on it along with a snap tool I mentioned earlier.
Paul I seen that holder now and will keep that in mind, I think checking around with you all on other dies for it, that are super needed. Ive just used some of the regular snaps and didn't have a clue on other options, but listening and will keep a look out.
Thanks
I've got one like the picture Mike posted for "common sense" turnbuckles. With my currant workload I couldn't justify the $350 or $450 I paid for it, but I was on Lake of the Woods when I bought it and used alot of turnbuckles on boats and porch blinds so it paid for itself in no time. Being able to set them while the project is still hanging in place is a huge time saver.

I have a piece of rail pin * that I hold as an anvil and bend and tap with my tack hammer.
*It's a broken piece of the steel rod that holds railroads together. The "handle" is about the size of D cell battery and then there is head on it like a flattened mushroom.

Darren my house in new hampsire I had was on a hillside bank of the lake and the road betrween the fron tof my house and the lake was a old railbed turned into a rural route over the years swimming I found many a discarded rail pins on the lakebed
A couple of years ago I heard of press n snap dies shown at a boat show for punching commonsense fasteners. Did they not become mainstream? It would seem like lift the dot and commonsense dies for press n snap would be real popular in lieu of the expensive hand punches offered.
That's a great idea Darren im sure its no problem for you and the tack hammer, cool idea.
You work smarter at this now with the years in, Thanks for the tip. I think the common sense type fasteners are on some other type equipment covers that could possibly help offset a cost a bit.
Nice enclosures Mike let me ask when I see the strips between the rear windows can that be had uh like quickly(don't know how else to say it) or do you need to cut all 3" strips, Brief description ?
Just curious if they are straight runs all the way (hot knife)
Yes I have seen some pics on here where the double screw based turn common sense type has been successfully used with a button pressed on opposite side for a canvas or other material. I purchased several for that specific use. If theres other pictures for the press n snap uses " im on em" send them or a good faith mention I am interested to check them out.
working on some brine for bbbacon got to go
Thanks guys and good day
As fas as using a turnbutton base with snaps caps to hold it to canvas the cit is a bit tight getting the tool i. Place it a better job done with long post caps rather ther the normal short ones.
And i think a plress n snaps may be a little not up to the job in some cases.
And the 3" strip i make double inside and out. Utting strip and folding
A little tri k to i stalling LTD's and turnbuttom grometts with the tools i showed above
Hang your window in place Then rather them marking the fastner location take your tool fit it over the lift the dot. And now slip the botton edge of tye window into the slot of the tool pulli tight. Now your ready to punch the hole. Put it just where you want it.
