Title: Auto upholstery question.
Post by: scott_san_diego on October 08, 2013, 11:36:31 pm
On the new cars now, they are putting air bags on the sides of the backs.  How do you handle sewing this with a new cover?
The reason I ask this is my wife has a 2012 Kia Sorrento with cloth seats and now she wants leather seats.

Thanks Scott

Scott:

I am not sure as I am not an Auto stitcher but I believe that anywhere there is an air bag in a seat you have to use a light thread in the area surrounding the air bag.

If you do not find an answer here then check out the Hog Ring forum. That site is all about auto upholstery.

One option you might have (haven't inspected the Kia) is transfer the exit vent into the replacement upholstery.

This comes up frequently in other vehicles, particularly repairs.

Familiar with air bags, careful those can "go off".  But, sounds like you are in control.
