What is the style of furniture today? New furniture that is.
Seldom do I hear what styles are sold, it is just new.
I can relate to a new contemporary piece, it favors older contemporary. However, the other fat arm stuff, to me is a different, in general from the era when style references to furniture were used more than now. The fat arm stuff is older colonial, stuff made back in the 30's.
A lot of consumers are discarding older furniture, seemingly not knowing it's inherent quality, and buying the new no style stuff because they think their furniture is out of date.
Why would someone get rid of older furniture, higher quality and of a classic style and buy this new stuff that is all alike and limited in colors (usually) and buy the new junk to stay in style. Is staying in style a function of just being like everyone else?
Does this make any sense?

Makes perfect sense DB. I call the new furniture, "over stuffed."

What do you mean
limited? You have a veritable plethora of choices like brown, dark brown, and beige. What more do you want? :D
Styles of furniture are typically attributed to a specific era. And since today's furniture isn't designed to last through even the shortest of eras, why go to the trouble to name it?
Oh wait.....I just thought of one more color........camel!!!
Id say there just sick of fhe old tired of looking at it. I bought a new ou he set when i moved to florida in 04. Ive been looking at it now for almost nine years im fired of it. When im done remoxeling the house (rite) i want to get a new look probly a leather l lounge.
The style of furniture today is 'price'. :D
Unless you go to the high end of the market, then people talk about styles of furniture, but not in terms of what is the style of furniture today, but in terms of what will go well in their home.
Many people (high end folks) are still into what's hot with fabric. Peacocks and Peahens are popular this year.
To answer your question, I would say that there is no overall, or even general, style in furniture today.

Pecocks and Peahens are in style today? I suppose that is why a customer brought me a chair and fabric of that design.
It offers color, I will say.

There is no fixed style of furniture famous among everyone now. People now rely on comfort first if they are comfortable then they buy it or else not. So mostly thick cushion based sofa chair are bought by many as they are comfortable and looks classy also.
Sculptured burlap chair.
I was thinking maybe Louis the 14th style? But, I can't see the legs well enough to be sure. :o

I am redoing a livingroom set built in the 20 or 30's made with solid oak, you can't get that anymore unles you pay $15,000 for a sofa. Why on earth would you buy the new junk (pli-wood and cardboard) sky's the limit with old, take the skirt off and change the legs, add a dress makers skirt, take the wings off, cut it down. Change the cushions, make them thicker with spring unit and down. There is so much you can do and still have a much better piece then new everytime!! My saying is, "It's better then New" I just want to note here also just because it is new and expensive does not mean it is anything but pli-wood now adays. I just did 2 Holly Hunt chairs and they cost $5000.00 each new and are pliwood. they also have elastic webbing under the deck with some coil springs hog ringed to the elastic. so they can say built with coil springs. none of them are tied!!!! they are leather but not the best I have ever worked with. So buyer beware... research before you spend!!!
