Title: What I did last night
Post by: Mike8560 on July 15, 2011, 06:34:55 pm
Well I did my teak over last week
http://i782.photobucket.com/albums/yy102/Mike8560/seacraft/689886d2.jpg
leaving the upholstery badly needing to be done.
So last night I  went from this

to. This
http://i782.photobucket.com/albums/yy102/Mike8560/photo-92.jpg
if this is the original post it's the best one I've encountered  the wood 3/4" sealed marine plywood was like new.
Waiting on a new motor head so I'll do the rest of the seats now.

Purrrrty  ;D

Nice work, Mike.  Who'd have guessed all that was just "under the covers"...   You probably just upped the value of that by $900.

Wow Mike, your application of "elbow grease" and the spiffy new leaning post cover really makes a  difference.  From BLAH to AHH.  Looks sharp.

Awesome Mike. As always your work is fantastic.

I own a Wellcraft Elite. Elite means lots of teak. Lots of teak means lots of work. After seeing the awesome job you did on your teak I am going to bring my boat down and let you redo all my teak for me. Call me when its done. :)

Great job. Love the back cushion too. :)

starting to look good there Mike, ,you're more industrious
than i am.

Motor head ? you have engine problems ?

My sailboat had teak seats and coamings and I used to varnish it
because the wood grain looked so nice, but after a couple of months
the varnish began lifting I gave up and left it to go silver.

Ya rich I used to oil teK but it goes to  pot. So fast my brother had a 72 32 ' Trojan flybridve and every spring we would be cleaning and oiling the entire deck was teak an
long with the handrail and gunnels Ect for days. Now I used ephanes from west marine. Sand and clean the teak then it a varnish but it dose t yellow and crack like regular old house varnish
The motor is a 150 evirude a guy owes me a favor so he is installing a new powerhead in trade

Chris it is ephanes spelling? From west marine
this had deep grooves in the teak  there was the leanin post console teak and trim on some bow storage hold and rod racks.  I just sanded then to clean. But you can use deks olay cleaner. And then oil if you like.
I would only get maybe 6 months before it looked to be getting bad with oil.

Thanks Mike.

I am sick and tired of screwing with the teak. The oil routine is getting real old and this harsh Florida sun just sucks the lifeblood out of it and before you know it your oiling it again.

I have teak on the front of the bow, a full length teak swimming platform, teak trim around the cockpit, teak trim around the rear seating area and three teak doors in the floor.

I think I will got ahead and do what your doing so I don;t have to screw with it for 3 years.

The key is a good marine product for teak and make a full. COver for the bost to cover from the sun

even over here where our sun isn't so harsh keeping it covered
is the Key,

I used to use Deks Olje, it goes on like an oil for the first few coats
and after about 6 coats it builds up like varnish.

It looks like they have a 2 part system now.

Looks really good when done but still lifts from teak in the sun, Teak has a
high oil content and tight grain so it's hard to get anything to stick.
I know my customer whos a wooden boat builder uses a 2 part epoxy
to varnish his wood with and that seems to last a long while.
