I was wondering how many of us have their business on face book?  My son set up a face book page for me and I just realized you can set up a business page also.  I am just learning my way around it, so my page is kind of unorganized at the moment, but just thought I would find out what others are doing.

I have a personal facebook page that I never use.  Boring.  It's format just doesn't really appeal to me.  Too much "instant" update crap... like I care that you're drinking a glass of water and looking out the window... Not!

But, all my (younger) hip friends tell me that a business page is a real no-brainer.  It's basically free advertising and you can update it as much as you find convenient.  I have to get a basic website up and functional before "going there", but I will.

I heard today that 9 out of 10 people  have a facebook account, and that it is getting up to Google in traffic. So I guess facebook will be the new google. But for me, I dont' know if facebook will work for an upholstery business or any business. I'm not going to facebook to find a business. But maybe I'm wrong. Also facebook is for fun, work is for work right? I guess you can try and see.

Also I hate telling people that I'm an upholsterer. Really, I don't want work to spill over into my social life.

The benefit to having one as an upholsterer (we are a supplier) would be to post lots of pictures of your jobs, and also you could encourage your customers to "like" your page with out having to "friend" your personal FaceBook page.  This eliminates those annoying status posts like what was for dinner and focuses the page on your business and can act as a good place to send people to get references without them calling your customers.

Business pages also rank well on google if they are utilized fully with contact info and news and recent jobs and such!  (Personal pages are usually blocked by search engines via personal prefs.)

My designer (curtis@curtissmeltzer.com) makes facebook pages, and can even update and market them the same as a website.

We had this discussion last night with some friends.  We all hate being type-cast by "what do you do for a living.."   We all wanted to alternate between

  • part time pizza delivery

  • "work for the government, but not able to say any more"

  • IRS tax auditor

One of my sons-in-law is a psychiatrist.   I don't know if attracts or repels people.   Last week on Jeopardy, Alex introduced one of the contestants as a "Neurologist resident."  The next day, he confessed that during a commercial break he asked about a pain behind his eye.   Turns out, the guy was really a "Urologist resident."  Oops.

I am suffering through the learning curve,  I started out with a personal page, but only had business info on it.  Then I found out how to make a business page, so I am transferring all my business info from my personal page onto the business page.  I already have a few friends and my wife even found a long lost cousin.  The sad thing is, I have no personal pictures on my computer to up-lode onto my personal facebook page.  My personal page got all kinds of people, well a few people requesting to be friends right off.  The business page has not gotten any, so I think the personal pages are promoted on facebook, but the business pages are not and the owner has to pay for advertising, or advertise them themselves.

The difference between a personal page and business page is that anyone can see the business page.  You don't have to "like" it or even be a friend before viewing the photos and seeing what there is to see on the page for the business page, whereas on a personal page, anyone can only view it if they are already a friend with you.

That said, Please like our Facebook page, and we will like yours!

Thank you Mike, we "like" you!

It would be helpful for anyone with a business facebook page to post a link on this site so we can like you easier!

I'll like you, exotic leather. My link's on the bottom there ☟.

The only thing I see wrong with fb is the overwhelming majority of my customers are men 40-55. This demographic is almost pathologically afraid of fb it seems. Every customer I ask says, "My wife and kids are on it but you won't catch me dead on that POS."

My Facebook business page is a hoot. I've had it for quite awhile, and currently have 163 friends on it. I like to go through the list sometimes and realize how many I DON"T know, but they have ended up there because of the free networking that's offered through Facebook. All of my e-mails, advertising, everything now includes "Facebook" search/ pro stitch auto. It's just as natural as putting in www.prostitchauto.com.  Our webpage is basically a place holder that lets people find our e-mail address. The current, living, changing document is facebook.

I have app. 40 albums on my Facebook. it includes past projects that I like, recently completed projects, and I also have "IN THE SHOP" albums that show what I'm currently working on. That helps customers see how their job is going, but also lets those interested see what's happening. I also have a couple fun albums, like our "Where in the world is PRO Stitch" album that I'm trying to get started. Peppy from our forum here has sent me pics of him in his PRO Stitch shirt up in Canada. I'm waiting on pics from Oklahoma, other parts of Illinois, and one coming from Germany. Just spreading the love of PRO Stitch. lol

The nice thing is that it is free. And everyone on my friend list just has to click "like" and a link pops up on their personal site. Which mean the one friend with 2,000 friends has just gotten my name out to 2,000 potential customers. Multiply that by 163 friends, and the sky is hte limit. I have been considering the adveritising block to the side, but have ye to pony up for it.

Exotic Leather

We now "Like" You Pro Stitch Auto.  :-)

The http://www.facebook.com/pages/Exotic-Leather/196309480408942?ref=ts link is for the Exotic Leather FaceBook Page.  It's still new, but we would like to see more than the 5 "likes" we have now!

mike802

Exotic Leather, for some reason you are not showing up in my friends list?

FB can be a huge advantage...   I have a biz account and a personal account.  I dont do much on the biz side because most of my "biz" is done locally and most people find me via the phone book or my web page.  Plus I dont have much time anymore to mess around with FB.  Its great when I am bored and need to relax..  I read the latest local stuff and keep up with the tornadoes on my  smart phone while sitting in the closet.   During the rash of storms in the past few days (with more to come), when the power is out -- I can stay on top of the weather thru FB updates from them... thats very comforting... and so is the soft glow of my smartphone in dark.   ;D

(Glad you all from the Carolinas are ok! Guess you saw what happened to St Louis..  anyone heard from DB? )

That said...  I will add y'all.
