Gene;
I have not immediate plans to recover it at this time though this site that June posted http://www.bondandbowery.com/printitem.php?itemid=3850
has me thinking....with a couple of easy design changes and some complementary colors it may be profitable.
As far as getting in and out of the lounge...there may be a spring that will "pull " the lounge back to the starting position that has become unconnected because once you are in the chair and release the lever thats it...it stays in that position untill you either get up and re position it or someone pushes it up for you.
I guess in all the commercials, that is why you never see that little ole lady / man getting out of the thing..it is as hard as getting out of a hammock...which is also very comfortable but cannot be reupholstered ;D

This seems to be the same idea and may have been the inspiration for the design.

Have done a few..what are the "insides" like? Are they foam fill or hair/matt?springs?
You must be as old or dare l say older than me, to recall Art Linkletter..maybe we should have an "old Guys" thread.. (bit of a play on words there) for us with vintage. ;D
I would still like to know the manufacturer if anyone else as old remembers!

I have one too Fragged but it is back home in Canada...they can destroy natural rubber though so care must be exercised!
Checking on THE naugahide site they simply recommend dish soap and warm water to clean then buff dry.

l hope to find a cleaner that will not remove the"patina" of the fabric..something maybe less of a chemical and more of a natural moisturizer that will remove the "smoke" residue that is on the surfaces.

i guess my discription made it difficult to imagine as it is not two pieces as you have thought it may be, it is one piece and the photos l will attach tomorrow will make it easier for you. The link you have included is more like an Eames Chair..two independent pieces..not at all what l have as you will see.

As an aside .what is the best way to remove the odour of cigarette smoke that has permeated this piece?

Well,l have been doing some estate sales searching for unique pieces and happened upon something very unusual.
I guess it could only be described as an ANTI GRAVITY RECLINER.
A very comfortable chair/lounge that when seated has a lever on the right hand side that will release the chair from its position and allow the persons weight ,legs, torso etc to be "averaged" and settle into a position that equally distributes ones weight. There are no springs or metal extendable hardware as it is not a recliner in the sense we currently know as a "recliner" and the mechanism releasing the chairs position is all wood! (maple)?
It is circa 1930s to 50s and is wood frame with arms, with naugahide or maybe even leather covering all sides except the bottom and 4 short wooded legs.
It may be a one off designer piece but l could find no readily visible makers mark...but it is extremely well made.
Any of you vintage collectors/upholsterers that may help me ID this piece it would be greatly appreciated.
Photos to follow.

Hey Guys!
Been a while since l chimmed in...life has been getting in my way again :-\
Thought this was a good topic so here goes.

Had a young lady with her own (small) sailboat. She asked me to quote and build new salon cushions and vee berth cushions.
She had to be convinced that the old foam was bad..mold and crumbling but finally saw what my concerns were.
We agreed on the details and set the costs $800. and l started to work.
a few days later work was done and l met with her to install the cushions..fit like a glove (not OJ'S) but she said that l was missing a back cushion and would not pay till job was complete. There was NO back cushion missing she just wanted a freebe so having the material and foam agreed to give it to her ..only took a few days so l left everything on board and said l would collect payment when she was happy and had her "missing cushion"we arranged to meet and deliver the final piece and collect my fee..she didn't show but called to say the boat was open and l could just put the cushion in the cabin..l did...thats when we started playing catch me if you can.....l made several trips to meet her at the boat but she didn't ever show.
She was using the boat because a time or two when l went to meet her the boat was gone.
She was rapidly using up my patience so l went to the boat one Friday morning ..found the boat open so boarded and removed all the cushions....THEN... she called me!
"Why did l remove the cushions?"  DUH...you didn't pay for them sweetie!
"Can l get them back today? if l give you a cheque today??..l want to go sailing this weekend"
"Sorry" l said "but l have decided to cut them open and use the foam and fabric for another job"
What?????????she said....."well if you have cash they can be reassembled" l said (they were still in the back of my truck).
So cash it was....but she didn't refer any work my way...THank you GOD!

General Discussion / Re: Replacing Enclosure Screens
April 21, 2011, 03:40:18 pm
Not too dificult ..I've done lots of those..trim off the selvedge of the old screen right close to the thread..if it has two lengths of stitching use your thread ripper to remove the outermost..you want to keep the shape of the opening with the old screen...lay it out flat on your bench and lay out the new screen on top of the old,on the inside so it is overlapping (larger) than the old one...staple it in place. then stitch a line on the new screen just outside the old where you had trimmed the selvedge off.
You now have two screens sewn on..flip it over and cut the old screen stitches and remove the old screen...now you can clean up the stitching if required on the new screen...easier than it sounds.
