Virginia, I started out with a Mac book in the late 90s and loved it, then moved on to laptops with Windows. They always disappointed me, and I am considering another Apple product. Currently I have the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch that all work in conjunction to each other, which I absolutely love. I'm always a wimp when it comes to trying something different, but pretty sure a Mac will be my next laptop.

I know every dog person has their own ways of working through training, and this is the one way I do it. It may or may not work for you, but I thought I would share anyway. I foster German Shepherds, and  get them, usually, at their worst. No obedience training, never been in a house, or abused and starved. While every dog is different, there are a couple things I am very consistent with. One is using a long line, which is a great learning tool. I place them on a long leash for the first couple days or week, depending on how quickly they pick up. They stay with me and stay on the line even when I take them outside to relieve themselves. I really like that I see a problem before it happens. I am able to see and reinforce good behavior and correct bad behavior instantly. Good behavior gets a tiny piece of a treat. Bad behavior gets a short quick tug on the line with a one word command. I never raise my voice and always consistent with my commands. I also never go overboard with praise as it seems to over stimulate them. When visitors arrive, I use the long line as a tool during this time too. When someone knocks on the door, find a place that your dog can go lay down. This something that needs to be practiced. After the visitors come in, wait several minutes before allowing your dog to get up and greet your guests. Your guests should already know that they are not to pay any attention your dog if he starts jumping on them or misbehaving. Quick tug and command should be given. If they continue to misbehave, lead them back to their 'place' to lay down. You may have to do this many times, but like little kids, you have to reinforce the learning constantly. Also, if you find that everything the dog is doing is wrong, make sure you give a command that you know he will do right. It helps with his confidence. Too many wrong moves and the dog will make an effort to do anything that pleases you; they give up. As well, those learning moments should be short spurts because they will tire of it and won't listen or learn at all. Hope some of this will help.

Thank you for the giggle. As one that had boys that played everything, I saw the parents that were over the top, and I was also the one that had to bite my tongue for the sake of the game and the kids. Not easy. LOL

The back of my slipper chair has 2 support rails. Before I removed the fabric, I could see those rails pushing against the old fabric. The last upholsterer did not add anything between the fabric or the rails. The picture is of the back after fabric was removed, and before tear down was completed.



The chair back curves and I will add webbing and Dacron, but I'm worried the wood might still show through. What else can I do to make sure they don't, and to give it a nice round look?

Thanks for all the advise, definitely gave me thought to ponder. I have placed several applications with companies. Most were willing to take on a customer that is not been 'established'. Apparently, being established for some means being in business for a very long time, but not sweating it. I can be a snob too. LOL

On another note, while I want to keep my supplies as cheap as possible, there are some things that I bought retail locally that I know I will not use a lot of in the beginning. I thought about visiting with local upholsterers for some supplies, but when I saw the cost of shipping with my wholesalers, I knew they deal with those same issues. Don't want to put them in that situation.

Over all, starting with must haves and adding as needed.

True, if it isn't one thing, it's another. Sorry you had to do that. One year our water heater busted and spilled water everywhere. Thank goodness for the shop vac which picked up most of it. It was a nightmare. Hope that will be the last of that for you.

I was confused between the avocado green and the style of the chair, so that makes sense.

This is a set of chairs that will require more than a recover. There are cracks, loose joints, loose springs, worn wood finish, and a broken leg. But I wasn't surprised, and always up for a challenge. :)







On another note, now that I found, what I believe to be, the original fabric underneath, I'm curious what decade these chairs were built. Can anyone recommend a book that covers this?

Or just do as they did last time.

The tacks are not original to the chair and looked terrible. I'll start a new thread under The Green Room with additional pictures. Even with the wood finish and eternal issues, this will be a great learning project. Pretty excited about it.

How much hydro do you have available?
I didn't have enough power in my little shoe repair shack for heat so I heated it with a kerosene heater and put a heat lamp in the light socket over the finisher where I stood most. It worked---

No Hydro. A storm has been blowing through and leaving snow. Yesterday was especially cold and I plugged in a couple space heaters to help.

Do you know how to handle the wood work?

They definitely need more than a touch up. I was considering refinishing to original, but many of the decorative tacks were placed right on top of the wood trim causing damage. Considering all options.

I really like how you centered the ship's helm on the front of the armrest.

Very cute. And love that it was re purposed. I think that is why I love to upholster is the opportunity to take something beat up and make it beautiful again.
