The Business Of Upholstery / Re: Computers and work
July 24, 2010, 03:05:43 pm
Book keeping I use Quickbooks Pro. Been using it for many may years.
Bank on-line. Yes. Pay bills on-line No in this business.
Invoicing done in Quickbooks. Records are forever.

There are many other uses for the computer. Estimates, E-mail, Pictures, Website, the list goes on and on. There is always a record of communications to CYA in case of a misunderstanding.

One other thing when you upholster the bench make sure all the salvage is folded down toward the boxing. It will look better and be more uniform in appearance. A top stitch might work out better placed on the boxing side of the the seam. If the customer will allow it.

General Discussion / Re: Sewing bucket seat backs
July 16, 2010, 05:44:00 pm
First as Saddleman said are your patterns perfect? If so are you sewing from the center of the top? It is very easy to loose the seam allowance when sewing car seats make sure the seam allowance is equal on both pieces. If not they will end up at different places. IF this is a standard seat back that looks to have curved top corners, straight at the top try this on both pieces. Fold each in half and this will give you the center mark. Then on each radius fold in half and notch the center. Now you have good marks to go by. If you are using the original covers as patterns they may have stretched a bit. Remember this and allow for the discrepancy. I like to make my own marks (registration marks) as I know these will be correct. All this assumes your patterns are good.
The sewing machine probably doesn't have much to do with the issue. Sounds like operator error.
  Good luck.

Naugahyde has a pattern called Surfside that is stiffer and has a glossier look than the newer soft handed patterns. It is not high gloss. He might be looking for a real shiny vinyl like that found in reasturant seating 50s look, very smooth alomost like glass. Can't help with that. Also his might just be old and stiffened up due to the loss of softners from the sun.

The frames were made by me. My design. Didn't have anyone spec any special sizes or shapes. Thanks for the comments.

Hi Gene,

Yes I make Upholstered mirrors. They never really took off. Sold a couple and the wife and family got the rest. I show some of them on my site.
I thought they were a good idea at the time. Still do if you find the right clientèle. I did have a few decorators at the time an put some in a couple of stores.

I had a generic type folder and used it on my pfaff with no problems. It does take some adjusting but not a big deal. I also worked around curves and curved corners I just had to go slow. No comparison to working without one. Now I need to get one for the Consew.

General Discussion / Re: How to apply gimp?
July 12, 2010, 03:11:36 am
There is a tip that is flattened on the end. This is what I use. It takes a little practice to apply the glue where you want it. Until you get the feel for it apply it to the gimp and then set the gimp in place. Do a section about 6" long at a time so the glue doesn't cool before you apply it. Take your time and you will get a feel for it. Don't put to much glue on or it will soak through the gimp.

Yea the hole is there. That is just the pad on there now. Other pics show it removed. I have found some info on this and asking about it to the person selling it.

General Discussion / Question on button machines.

This is a Handy Jr. I have never seen one like this and don't know if it is the same as the models that have the exposed spring. I wonder if any of you may have seen this model and if the regular dies will fit this model?
  Thanks.

This is a common way to get you to try products or services and then possibly give you something in return. NOTHING like this is FREE.

Yes this one only the one blade moves. And the Bosch both do. I am still going to look for a Bosch as I know the tool and liked it very much. Had one for many years with no issues at all. But money talks and if I can't find a good one used I will have to go with tis type.

The Business Of Upholstery / Re: Dealer Discounts?

Sicking my nose in on an old posting but it is relevant to anyone searching the subject.

When I do an estimate it is a figure for materials, labor and a little for the business. In other words it is the price. Doing work business to business is no different.

In regards to Kathy's original post. If you offer a good job and don't gouge the client. You should make a decent living at what you do. Any less and you are loosing. In today's climate the trades are feeling this badly. For many years now the trades have lost.

Lets take back what we are due. Don't undercut everyone else and bid responsibly.

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the input. I've been looking at that foam saw and I think Rick at Florida Supply uses one. I asked his girl in the workroom about it and she said it worked well. If I can't find a good used Bosch I'll probably go with that one.
I've looked at your site before nice work. Thanks for the welcome.
