Forsail,
That is it, you nailed it.  Sometimes you have to get pinched more than once.  I made the alterations over the weekend and I will be returning the cover this Wednesday.  I hope very much that he is happy with it and this can be over with....
Then I'm going the wright all over the walls of my shop, don't take a job without laying it out myself...!!  Second hand info will never workout right..!!

I'm sure we all hate to be that way Mike.  But sometimes people have an agenda to wear you down and get things cheaper maybe.  I for one would have done the same thing.  Took my cover and run.  And if this alteration isn't satisfactory I will be taking my cover back and giving a full refund...and I will chalk it up to a lesson learned.  But I will make very effort to make to alterations the best I can...

Yeah, I forgot, some sailboaters have very bad reputations for being difficult and dare I say cheap...

General Discussion / A sail boom boot gone wrong...
June 19, 2013, 06:57:17 am
I took a job to do a boom cover for a co-worker of my brothers and he has turned out to be a very particular person.
So he bad mouthed me when the cover wasn't right.  My brother explained it's had to work off an old cover and that I never even saw the boat.  So, I also re-learned a valuable lesson, never try to make a new cover from an old one.  Even a boom cover..!!!!

So now I am getting it back to alter it, which I don't mind too much this time.  But if he is still not happy I am going to offer his money back and chalk it up to lesson re-learned.  The reason I metioned this is because I never had a cover come back on me and I have done quite a few over the years. This sucks worse because it's my brothers co-worker so I guess yet another lesson learned, deal first hand with your customer.

Anyone get into a job and wish they could get out...??  And how did you finally get out...??

Mike,
I have been helping rebuild my parents house after hurricane Sandy, so my time to myself has been non-existant.  So 2 weeks ago one of my friends asks me if I can do a speedboat sunpad, seats, and fix his mooring cover.  I said, why in the world, would you wait till now...I had to tell him there was no way I could get it done till the end of June.  You want to get these projects done, you want to make everyone happy, but there is only so much time...

It's  funny, I went to a big canvas shop yesterday to pick up some webbing.  Started talking with the owner, she said they are 6 weeks from starting any new work...!!  In the last week I have gotten emails and calls from friends of friends and family, "Hey, can you help me out, everyone is busy, I need this done".

I do all my work as side jobs from my primary job in the healthcare field.  Maybe thats why I still love to upholster, but here is the thing, like most people, I want to enjoy the summer.  So if I take on a side job now,,, it needs to be worth my time.

I am sure many you have gotten much busier now that the season has arrived.  Do you get a lot of unhappy people who have waited too long...and now have to wait even longer because you can't get to it...?

General Discussion / Re: Worst Canvas Ever

WOW...that's some piece,,,,,,,,,,,,of work...lol   The thing is, even if you have never done one before, it begs the question, why wouldn't you look at other jobs to get some ideas or a clue..??  My first bimini was far from perfect but I knew to use some darts because I copied some elses design.

But maybe the guy he hired thought he could re-invent the wheel, then realized he was in over his head with the job and bailed out.

We all know you don't buy a sewing machine, and have at it without srewing up.  I just made sure I screwed up my own stuff first...hahaha.

They were doing an enclosure at mcti when I  was there with that and the machine was servo motor running real slow and using gore ptfe thread and mr needles. Sounded like a punch press more than a sewing machine at the speed they were stitching it. Im sure Dawn there could tell you something good to use if you are still looking.

Thanks for the tip, I am waiting on the Oceanclear right now.  I think its what I'm after.  I have a Juki/Chandler machine and it's pretty tough, should be fine.

I just spoke with Steve from Oceanclear, super nice guy.  He is sending me a sample today.  I have a feeling its exactly what I am looking for...  He also imformed me I should use TFLE or teflon thread but can get away with v138 bonded polyester however the plastic will out last the thread...

You can only get it from Steve. His price is less than others for makrolon. What he sells, has a more flexible coating than Makrolon.
Also if you use Makrolon, you need AR2 that has coating on both sides.

I am guessing Steve is the owner of Oceanclear?  I will give him a call tomorrow and see what sizes he has.  The pictures on his site are great, thats really what I want.

Wow, the Oceanclear looks like what I need.  I didn't see anyway to order it on their site.  Anyone know who is a distributer for them that won't kill you on price...???
