I see the temps have been outrageously high lately in the North. I also just seen where Canada, ( our 51'st State ) just got smacked with an earthquake.

My question is, what are you Canadians doing up there ? You messing with Mom nature again ?

I have been reading all over the Internet where the Cannucks were shocked by the earthquake because they have never felt one before. Did any of you Northerners feel it ?

I wonder if there would've been the same amount of concern from the US members if he called himself the 'prick of the north' .

If members are easily offended then perhaps the admins should consider installing a swear filter?

Hey.......I resemble that remark but I am from the South and not the North.  :D

In regards to installing a filter, I see no reason for it. This is the first time that I have seen any controversy on here over a word that was used. The female members suggested it was offensive to them, it was hashed out, many understand where they are coming from, most agreed with them and life goes on.

This forum is one of the most laid back forums on the internet. Rarely is there controversy on here. So I personally do not see any reason for a filter for swear words. How often does someone come on here and unleash " F " bombs and other offensive language ?

Myself, if I was Ken or Bobby, I would lock this thread and let it die a quick death. Everything has been said that needed said, everyone understands that a few were offended and the deal is done.

Just my two cents worth. Let's learn from this, forget it and move on and discuss some subject that doesn't have any hot button issues............like government regulations, the war in the Middle East, the BP oil spill or maybe those overpaid worthless teachers who suck the lifeblood out of government
agencies. :)

JMHO,

I think it all comes down to respect for one another as Doyle was alluding to.

If you offend someone then a simple apology is in order and we move on to the next topic.

Everyone has hot buttons whether it be a topic or the language used which can set someone off.
What compounds the problem is that this is a forum where words are typed and read and this makes it very hard to understand where that persons emotions were when making a statement. That has always been a problem with forums, there is no way to read that persons emotions so we are left to take a statement in our own way. Sometimes this is compounded by the mood we maybe in that day. :)

For the most part this forum is very low key, respectable and easy going. Everyone helps everyone with advice and suggestions and supports one another, even in personal situations that have nothing to do with upholstery.

If something is said that offends another then I would hope an apology is offered up and the conversation moves on. I cannot think of any member on here that would knowingly offend another on purpose.

I never seen the members name till you brought it up Bobbin. I had to go back and see who and what it was you were talking about. Shows you how observant I am. :)

I have heard the word used in two different contexts. So I can see where your coming from. Fact is, this is the first time I have heard that word in ages. It just isn't as common as it was 30 years ago.
That word I believe was replaced with another non-favorite 4 letter word which makes the hair on the back of a woman's neck stand up.

Some language belongs in the locker room among the guys. That is probably one of those words that is better off left out of conversations in mixed company. It is just a matter of having respect for others. :)

Pot does work great in some people who are on chemo. It increases their appetite and has a tendency to cut down on nausea and sickness. Unfortunately I am not one of them.

Ever since I was a teenager the smell of pot made me sick. I could never get used to that smell and when I was in high school I avoided the areas at parties where it was being smoked.

The good news is that Ginger tablets do help considerably with the nausea and I have a medicine cabinet stuffed full of med's that will alleviate the bone marrow pain. Of course it has a tendency to make me a hell of allot more dopier then I normally am. :)

Not having an appetite is a good thing in my case considering I have a rear end the size of Bobby's fire truck. :)

Funny thing about that pot. I went to school with a guy who was a real pot head. He smoked it everyday and never graduated to anything stronger in the way of drugs. He is in his 50's and still smoking that stuff. Like back in our teen days he still has the energy and the drive of a halibut laying in a fish market cooler. :)

I will stick to my ginger tablets and Loritabs, but I sure appreciate all the suggestions ..:).......:).....:)

By the way, did you know that frequent trips to Hooters actually helps men who are going through cancer treatments ? Well, it helps me anyways......:)

I just wanted to thank all of you for your concern, well wishes and prayers.

Ask anyone who has battled cancer and gone through chemo regimens and they will tell you they got through it all with the love and support of family and FRIENDS.

You guys have no idea just how much your words continue to give me strength and courage to continue the battles.

Thanks everyone. Your all awesome people.

My new upholstery shop is at a stand still at the moment.

I managed to get the wall erected, wired, insulated, two storage closets built and everything the drywall installed. All that is left is the dreaded mudding, sanding and trim. I also need to get the overhead lights wired as well and the ceiling insulated. . All the wall outlets are installed and working great.

The reason for the halt in work is because I just started chemo today so progress on the shop is going to go REAL slow. I plan on doing a little each week until my body adjusts to the chemo drug. Until then I plan on catching up on some paperwork, movies, sleep and other little projects that allow me to sit at a desk or in my recliner and do them. :)

My shipment of the drug came in a week ago and by all indications after the first injection it is some very strong stuff. Thankfully I have enough pain killers to get me through the first couple months. Nothing like living life in a drug induced coma.......LOL. The good news is the installation of my jacuzzi tub is finished so that will help tremendously with the bone marrow pain.

This down time will give me a chance to design the layout of the room, tables, fabric racks, etc. as well as get some much needed rest. I will get some pictures up of the shop when I get the chance.

Everyone have a great week.

Hm......My wife never said anything about the Yanks beating the Aussie's.

She is currently on the Northern beaches of Sydney for the month visiting her Mum, Brothers and Sister. I will have to mention something about that to her and my brother in law. :)

I don't blame you Kathy.

There is an old saying that my father used to tell me ( all the time )

" surround yourself with good people and good things happen to you ".

I just have no use for liars and cheats and I myself would walk away from these people.
It is so hard to deal with people you do not trust so I just avoid them. It makes you wonder what the next drama would be when they call you for another job.

Something tells me you really do not need their work anyways and you will do fine walking out on them.
I wouldn't worry about it anymore and keep moving forward. Chalk this entire episode as a great learning experience.

I have a rule...........never tell anyone what your labor rate is. I have better things to do then go into a long drawn out explanation of why my labor rate is so high. Customers simply cannot see all the costs associated with this business and equate your labor rate to what they are getting paid.

When I bill or quote a job I do it as a total with no mention of labor or hours involved. Most of my customers could careless anyways. All they are thinking about is what the total bill is going to be.

My money is on the dealer feeding you a line.

I had a customer once tell me he got a bid and it was much lower then mine. I told him......" wow........you better jump on it then. "

I gave a lot of my work away in the beginning when I first started but wont anymore. I charge a fair price on all my bids and that is it. I wont allow myself to get beat up on price.

I do caution you Kathy not to get involved or caught up in these bidding wars. Figure out what
you want to charge and then charge it and stand firm. There are people like this dealer who will play all kinds of games to beat your price down.

Stand firm and if they don't want to pay it then to hell with them. I have found that people who beat you up on price also tend to be a royal pain in the butt down the road.

Best of luck.

General Discussion / Re: Reliable suppliers

I just switched suppliers from Sailrite and Rochford to Bry Tech.

Bry tech is out of Jacksonville and typically has the fabrics and supplies I need on hand.
Living in Florida its nice to get shipments so fast while saving on shipping costs.

They carry alot of the popular fabrics and vinyls and their prices are good. Typically I tell them what Rochfords prices are and they beat them.

Rochford BTW is real good at stinging you on shipping charges. They make money off you on the materials
but also make a good profit on their shipping charges.

Here is Bry techs info - http://www.bry-tech.com/index.htm

I do know that many suppliers are watching their inventory very close because of the costs involved in stocking so many items. This isn't just in the upholstery supply sector but in many sectors. Suppliers of goods are reducing inventory on hand because of the economy. So I suspect we will see more of this in the months ahead.
