Greetings and salutations from a fellow upholsterer.

I've got two barrel back chairs. The previous upholsterer put jute webbing across the bottom of the chair frame. He/she then made a cushion that fits in the recess of the deck. Then he/she made a seat cushion that sits on top of the cushion that sits in the recess of the deck.

Do you think this was the way the chair was originally made? I am certain there were no springs originally because there are not enough tack holes. Even if it was a murphy spring set there are no holes where the top cover could have been tacked down.

Here are the pics and thank you for your thoughts.

QUALITY DOES NOT COST, IT PAYS!

I saw this once before on a chair similar to yours. I guess it wouldn't be hard to change to a more typical deck but I did mine the same as the original.
There cannot be a crisis next week. My schedule is already full.

Thank you for the reply. I couldn't think of a better, or more original way to re do this chair. I'm glad to know someone else has seen this style of deck.

These chairs, probably from the early 1900's, has been reupholstered twice before. I wonder if the original had all horse hair for the deck cushion?
