General Discussion / Re: scheduling
June 22, 2016, 08:33:24 pm
Something that I used to do every week is schedule a "catch up" day, usually on Friday. I stopped doing this a few years ago and now I am always behind and working too many hours. I enjoy this work a lot when I get ample time off, not so much when I don't.

General Discussion / Re: Thread knots up in reverse

Well I got the Highlead working. The biggest problem is the stupid manual that is like reading something written by an intoxicated sailor. When your already frustrated to the point of not being able to see straight it only compounds the situation!

I actually cheated as I own two of these machines and the one I use the most and had the problem with is at my home (air conditioned). So I brought the head from my other machine home from my shop today and parked it right next to the problem child.

The needle bar height was off about 3/16" and the feed dog and needle plate was out of adjustment too. After resetting these items, I retimed the needle to hook setting and presto!

Thanks for all the replies, I definitely feel more confident to handle future machine woes.

Thanks, I have tried a new bobbin case and needle. The problem all started with a thread jam in the rotating hook assembly. I have messed with the adjustment and made it better and worse but haven't been able to get everything timed and set up properly yet.

General Discussion / Thread knots up in reverse
June 20, 2016, 08:29:18 pm
Hello all, it's been a while since I have been on here. Way too busy, and I have a frustrating problem with my Highlead GC0618. I believe it's a timing issue, however the owners manual is in Chinese English and not easy to understand.

Whenever I push the reverse lever down the thread bunches up on the bottom. If I reverse very slow and easy it will not bunch up as bad. Also, the upper thread keeps getting thrown off the thread controller.

This machine has had a lot of use the last five years and has been trouble free until now. I am thinking about upgrading to a Japanese or German built machine. Any recommendations?

Any input here much appreciated,

Tim

Good for you Chris,

I am going to take some time off too. In fact, I have been looking into ways to downsize, minimalize, and simplify life, home and business. None of my junk is going with me when I croak anyway!

My three year old grand daughter calls me Crap-pa. My wife has a little too much fun with this! LOL!

Glad to hear you going to be able to enjoy your family and what's important this Christmas season!

The Business Of Upholstery / Re: Aqualon Fabric
November 16, 2014, 03:13:26 pm
I have made at least a hundred boat covers from the stuff and have had no complaints. When I first used Aqualon (around 2001) it was 9.25oz and I really liked the stuff. About five years ago they changed the fabric to 9.0oz and in my opinion it did not seem to last as long or have the same quality. Today Aqualon is 9.5oz and while I'm not sure it is as good as the original 9.25, it holds up well, is easy to work with and I still have not had any complaints from customers.

We got about an inch here in Missouri and the temps have been way below normal. I'm with Gene, the older I get the more I dislike winter! Having eight grand kids and one great grandson I can confidently say we won't be moving anywhere warm either. If I worked indoors all of the time it would not be so bad.

Argh!!!!!!!!!!!

Being in denial about my age I like to roller blade, climb things and compete in mud races.

No worries, I just went ahead and ordered a bag of each so I will have them on hand. This boat sits on a covered lift so covering the windshield was not necessary.

I have never had my pants altered either. Perhaps there is a taylor forum that help?

34 to 32??? Sound like the little feller needs to eat more!

Best wishes!

Can any of you boat folks tell me what size clips to use on late model Cobalt boats? It looks like Trivantage has either 3/4 or 7/8.

I measured the boat last week for a cockpit cover and forgot to measure for the clips.

I have been a marine mechanic since 1984. Started doing boat covers in 2002 to fill in the slow off season times, got frustrated at my lack of speed and quit sewing from 04-07. Started back up in 2008, been doing mostly boat covers and some upholstery every since as well as mechanical stuff too.

General Discussion / Re: new shop

Very Nice! Having a view is a big deal. I used to have a shop with no windows at all and my radio would hardly work as the building was double walled metal. It was like solitary confinement.
