I've done some cushions in the linens and you're right, the foam core welting is a bit too stiff/heavy for it.  That's what I used and it came out fine, but I'd also like a lighter/softer core for this fabric.

There was some guy on here a few months ago advertising that his company would heat pleat anything you sent him.  Was it in the business section?  Sorry, I don't remember.  Maybe they could do a few yards for you for less than what you've been quoted.

Boston Whalers have a cult following.  They're the only boat on the market that I'm aware of that will actually appreciate in value.  Oh... and welcome!  :D

General Discussion / Re: White marking pencils

Agreed, they're not terribly useful.  Even on dark Sunbrella they only make a mark for about 30 seconds.  ANY touching, rubbing layers of fabric together will remove the marks completely.  I don't like them at all.  Wish I had a better option.  China markers are too hard to remove from the vinyl/fabric/Stamoid so I don't like them either.

BTW, speaking of markers, last night I left a sheet of Strataglass laying on top of a plastic pattern I had marked up with Sharpie.  Dang if the Sharpie didn't transfer into the glass  :o  It won't come off the glass.  Luckily, the marks were my seam lines so if I move my seams a fraction they'll be covered.  I've never had that happen before.

Yep, Kiwi's probably right.  On my new-to-me double needle Singer, I have a single needle loaded only on the left side of the needle bar.  When I threaded it, I knew that it was a mirror image of the threading/needle on the right, but being dyslexic as I am, threaded the needle left to right instead of right to left and for the life of me, couldn't figure out why on earth the dang thing would come unthreaded after a single stitch.  DUH!  Blush...    :-[  And I've been sewing since I was 7 or 8.  I had to actually watch the hook pick up the thread before I figured it out.

The "GREEN" Room! / Re: Just a little dodger
June 28, 2010, 07:05:31 pm
Hi, and welcome to the group.  I'd say that's some "little" dodger.  NICE!  I really like all the glass, though in S. Florida, that would be called a greenhouse/hothouse and you'd be growing (frying) tomatoes in it.  I suppose in your climate (where are you anyway?) the view of the mast/sails is worth more than the abundance of heat.

60 gauge or 40?  What's your technique for insetting the glass in the fabric?  Does your glass run to the seams/fasteners?  I'm assuming it does and the fabric is appliqued on.  Your rounded corners would preclude a traditional (by S. Florida standards) facing.  Do tell!  And welcome!  Amazing work (and an amazing sailing yacht)

Mike and June are probably going to suggest I get my head examined as I think both of them are grouper lovers ( seems everyone in Florida is crazy about Grouper ) , but for me, a good ole plate of catfish cannot be beat.
Chris

YUCK! on the catfish.   Tastes like mud.  Grouper is great, but the best eating fish on the planet has to be hogfish.  Very delicate.  Best broiled with salt, pepper, lemon juice and butter.  Salmon is good too, but I'll only buy the wild caught stuff.  I don't care for the idea of farm raised salmon where they eat corn meal like our cows - only with pink dye thrown in.  Salmon I marinate in teriyaki then saute till medium in olive oil, sesame oil and grated fresh ginger.  Yum!!!  Shoot, it's almost 9 and I'm hungry.  Later guys.  Gotta make dinner.

Oh, I thought you were referring to something solid - you're talking about underlining.  I'd never use the non-woven stuff on marine work.  The marine underlining is woven and won't rot when wet.  Comes in black and white.

Autrey, I think.  When I was a kid, the movie came on the Thursday mailboat and we'd watch it on Friday night at the yacht club (I'll describe it to you guys one day -let's just say we sat in lawn chairs and watched it on a cement block wall that was painted white).  And the highlight of these movies was the 20 minute "serial" that played before the main feature.  I've seen dozens of Gene Autrey (and Trigger) serials, not to mention the Lone Ranger, Buck Rogers, and others.  Boy does this thread bring back memories.  I thought he had Trigger buried on his feet with saddle and bridle on.  Never heard about him having him stuffed.

Looks like Starboard with lots of fibers (fibres for those of the Brit persuasion) thrown in?

I meant to ask last night... did you pattern those pieces with brown paper  ;D ?  and did you have to use heat to get the skins stapled on or just pull and tug?

Whoa dude!  That's amazing work! Looks terrific.  Only those who've ever attempted stuff like that can truly appreciate just how hair-pulling a task like that can be.  As for growing elbows, I'm lucky to have small arms that can fit through cup holders right up to my shoulder, but on more than one occasion, I've used my angle grinder to take the head off the screw and something else to reattach.

You should be proud of your work on that one, though.

So who are these people (or are they bots) posting "nothing" messages just to get their tag line links out there?  Most annoying.

I hear ya there.   I'll be in the shop all day too.  BTW, welcome!  Don't think I've said that yet.  We're a hard-working but helpful bunch here.  You'll get through it, I'm sure.  Determination does it when nothing else does.
