Yes I am talking about the temporary upholstery tack that you use to position the fabric before doing the final staple,
thanks for explaining about the tape I am new to upholstery my background is in draperies, so some of the terminology I use I have read in books

How do I get someone's previous post (quotes) onto my reply post? These are the boxes with blue background that appear as
"quotes" and people then post their reply underneath them.

There should be minimal stress on a deck cloth when sitting in the piece. Thats why it is help up above the springs. Pulls can be a pita if not properly used. In todays sewing many use mono thread and when you cut the seam it opens easily. If this happens on a pull it can be a problem. I like the use of pulls to save fabric when I buy it and the way I do them on Inside arms and backs is when measuring these parts I bury the tape 2" below the deck and this is where the pull gets attached. When I make my cuts for the tails these end up above and below the pull's seam. Making it stay solid and even stronger to pull on.
Sofa I never thought about what you mentioned about hardening the area for tack draws (staples). Makes sense.

The tape that you refer to (2"below the deck) what kind of tape is that?

Thanks again for all your input, I put the old skirt up to the lower back railing (from the floor up) and the top edge of the skirt is just below the bottom of the 1x1 so I don't think it was there to attach the skirt to, but your replies have really helped me to understand what to do. By the way I am a she, I should have signed my name-Elsa

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, I guess what I was referring to would be  the pull fabric that you sew onto the deck and inside arm fabric. My concern about using scrap fabric for that is that it might not be strong enough and would eventually tear under the stress of being pulled on when people sit on the deck cushions thereby putting stress on the deck fabric and the pull fabric as well.

Thanks so much for all of your replies, sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I haven't been  on the site for a while and then I have been trying to figure out how to post some photos. I hope this link works if it doesn't I will keep trying till it does
These are front and back views of the 2x2 and back railing, as well as the type of springs, the wood in question is above the springs.

Thanks for the info I wasn't sure if the stretcher fabric had to have a certain strength so that the seams hold under the weight of people sitting on the deck cushions

Thanks for your input, my piece of wood is actually attached on top of the stretcher fabric that is attached to the deck fabric so the stretcher fabric is sandwiched in between the 2x2 and the railing if any one else has some ideas I would appreciate

I am reupholstering a sofa and when finished stripping I found that the stretcher fabric for the back part of the deck had been stapled to the back railing and on top of that a 2x2 had been stapled with thick wood staples I assume to better secure the stretcher fabric, do I remove this with a crow bar and get a new 2x2? I don't have the tools to remove the heavy wood staples and some of them are too deep anyway.

Hi all I am new to upholstery and I am doing a sofa reupholster of my own. When I stripped the old fabric I found that what had been used for stretcher fabric on decking and inside arms is a thin gray poly ethylene looking material, does anyone know where I can get this?
