thanks guys!
hey Darren,
moved to Saskatoon. still got the business but just kept the one client - still building Rockgards. Well the hubby is anyway. I saw a job for operations manager at Denham Awning (they make lots of boat covers!) so I applied - Rockgard numbers are only enough o keep one of us busy- got the job, started two weeks ago. It's like running my own business but someone else is paying me to do it! Get on really well with the owner, I hope to be here for a good while! I missed the interaction with customers that working at home doesn't give you plus I'm learning new stuff - never done awnings before.

How about you? still bathfitting?
I should get on here once in a while to catch up with the gossip!

General Discussion / Re: Horsehair in Canada

Horsehair is not available in Canada.  I tried to get some when i first came here 16 years ago and was met with horror that you would actually use hair from horse in your furniture! Your only option is to find old pieces and clean and recard the hair from those.

Just a question, why are you putting springs in?  most restaurant seating is just good quality high density foam (usually about 4'').
Build a base - usually about 14'' high.(for a total finished height of about 18'') divide your banquette size into say four foot sections, this way when a piece gets damaged you only have to replace part of it.upholster each section and block it it place. We usually make seats 18 - 20''

sorry I can't remember how to post pics but if you can get on this photobucket link there are a couple of pics of a small restaurant we built last year.

Hi All,

Started using weathermax this year...love it!  makes awesome boat tops. Also made two sets of awnings for a motorhome and someones house.
I've made five full on travel covers for Malibu jet boats and the customers are all raving about how nice it folds up for storage. Today I'm making a bimini top for a small 18' boat and it's looking great.

It was originally developed for the military so it must be tough! If you check out the specs it more than holds its own against Sunbrella, and you don't have to re-proof it every two years!

Shame they don't make a matching binding.

2'' strips of herculite (sampson), sunbrella centrefold binding.

I wouldn't use vinyl for reinforcing, especially if it isn't marine grade. It will eventually dry out, shrink and crack. Plus when you are putting it on if it's not cut in the 'no stretch' direction, it could effect the fit of the cover.

I know lots of people use webbing and it seems to work really well too.

From what I can tell Frem Rojli is the maker. You see lots of pieces saying Designed by Hans Olsen for Frem Rojli.

Happy New Years Everyone!!

General Discussion / Re: Furniture Question - Arm Covers
December 14, 2011, 08:24:56 am
I recently finished two wingchairs and was asked for arm covers and antimacasars. You are right, only old people ask for them. I don't generally upcharge for them as it is only the occasional customer who asks.
For those of you unfamiliar with the word 'antimacasar' it is the 'doilie' or piece of fabric that goes on the back to protect from head oils. It is derived fron the macasar oil that people used on their hair in the Victorian times. Over time they became fancier - lace, embroidered etc.

A bit of useless info to start your day!

I agree with the general consensus of 1960 - 1970. 1960 makes it 50 years old - an antique in some circles! Personally I think they have to be over 100 years to be classed as antique.
Anyone know for sure? (it's definately 100 years in th UK)

I'm with Doyle's line of thinking. Sounds like you have two different types of needles. Check the packaging, the first set of numbers and letters should be identical.
