I don't do FB. Maybe the group thing is different, but the account I set up is overwhelmed with crap I don't care about from people I hardly know. If I wanted to know what somebodies niece dressed the cat up as for Halloween---I'd call them.

Yes our membership ( of active posters) isn't what it was ten years ago, but it's still nice to hang out here every morning knowing that if I'm in a pickle someone will bail me out and that if I have an opinion or some advise I'm respected and considered a friend.

Instead of throwing in the towel, maybe we should reach out to those who have quit checking in here. I have contact info for Virginia and John, maybe a couple of others.

if you do remove the fabric I'd take a paper pattrern before I pulled the nails.

If I were to try to follow the old holes I would only pull the fabric down to the top nails so that I could "peek" for the old holes and then work my way down and staple the bottom last.

Brilliant idea Steve. Are there no spreaders inside running side to side to keep the webbing from turning the rectangle into an hour glass? I would include at least one on the insert.

I am still on here every morning about this time. I bring my laptop out into the little tent on my deck and have coffe and a smoke with the group. It's just hard to type in the dark.

Most of the vinyls I get up here in Canada don't have much difference up/across the roll for stretch. Or maybe I was a shoemaker too long and the difference seems less important to me compered to leather LOL. With leather or a vinyl that does have a real difference I was always taught to run the stretch side to side. The logic is that people don't slide side to side as hard or as often as they do front to back getting in and out of the seat. Less chance of it stretching out and "bagging/wrinkling"  that way.

It's only function is to let the vinyl "slide"as you stretch it on rather that sticking to the foam. I always keep a roll of Saran wrap in the shop to put on corners etc before I stretch the cover on,

"No, I Didn't Die!"

Hi Gale. Glad to hear that and to see you back. Are you getting this cold snap over there, or is it staying north west of you ?

I've never used magnetic tape. In fact I am not even sure where I would get it here. I'd use velcro just because I have it on hand, it's sewable, and I think it would be cheaper than magnetic tape.

Merry Christmas from chilly southern Manitoba. Minus 28 C with winds up to 46km making it feel like -44. When I flip the weather channel over to 'Merican it's 18 below feeling like 47 below F .

Glad that worked out for you. Did you clamp the leather or the belt sander? just curious. After all those years making and repairing shoes it's second nature for me to hold the leather and work it against the sander like I'm using an finisher* again. Wondered if you found it easier that way. I have a picture in my mind of someone reading this and then trying to thin out a 3X3" piece for a patch somewhere.

*Finisher"---big noisy sander/trimmer used in the shoe business.

If you want to skive the leather get a Tina knife and a slab of marble or plate glass. It is much faster than sanding the edge down. if you want to thin out the leather a belt sander clamped into your workmate is your best choice or a large diameter drum sander (like 3") mounted on a horizontal shaft. You have much more control moving the leather past a fixed sanding device than doing it other way around [unless you're doing the whole hide LOL]. Set it up so that the belt is traveling down and support the leather with a leather half sole or a piece of wall paneling etc... and draw it up against the motion of the sander. Don't go for the home run!! Make several light passes.[wink]

Rather than soaking in cold water I would run it under warm water till it stops bubbling and then let it sit until it feels damp.

Be careful saying "easy job". I've had salon chairs, message tables etc...become a loosing proposition because I didn't allow enough time for all the disassembly and a few rusted/bent bolts.

If it is an upscale salon, show them some samples of Crypton. I've used a fair bit of it for the hospital here. They have some nice patterns and solids.
