"She told me in no uncertain terms that we will not be making a basketball shaped pillow. :("

I've been rather fond of Rose ---until now [pout]. why does she not want to do this? I think it would be kinda cool.

Borrow a basketball from your local school/kid down the street. wrap it in masking tape and mark the seams. Carefully cut and remove the tape and stick the sections to pieces of brown paper. Add your seam allowance and presto---there is your pattern.

( old shoe making trick,wink)

General Discussion / pot question
April 22, 2018, 01:48:54 pm
Hi gang. Way outside the lines here, but you're the only group of 'Mericans I know and some of your states have legalized pot. Our second generation moron prime minister has decided to legalize marijuana.   I know some of your states have done the same. I have only 1 issue with that. How do your people assess and deem someone technically "under the influence" if they have smoked a bit of weed? If I have had a beer or two the cops take a road side breath analysis and if I fail we go the cop shop for a breathalyzer test. If i am over .08 I go to jail. How do you measure thc and what is the allowable limit in your state? My government has yet to provide clear direction on that.

"Are there some needles that are better for piercing leather hide when sewing ?
SA:

Yes there are chisel point needles for sewing leather, but for most upholstery weight leather a regular ball point needle is sufficient.

"Not sure what is causing it but ---"

Delivery drivers. most furniture is shipped with the legs inside the dust cover ( that's what the zipper is for) and the retailer has some minimum wage kid with a strong back and weak mind assemble and deliver the piece. If you ever saw some of these guys in action you would wonder how any furniture actually makes into the living room.

Instead of cotton I tie the strings around a 3" piece of tee braid welt folded in half.

On seats like that you can also use tacking strip and staple the covers on. tacking strip is a hard rubber 1/2" wide by 1/4" thick by the yard that is used on convertible tops by the auto guys. I've riveted it onto several motorcycle pans, tractor seats etc...

I ran out on the last tractor seat I had to do so used 1/4" plywood to finish. It was tedious cutting a 1/2" wide piece of plywood the shape of the seat---but it works.

"Yep, the wood working/refinishing would be an additive dimension to the interest of most"

I'm a good carpenter, a decent cabinet maker, and not half shabby at basic touch up/staining---but I follow Steve ( and some others) input on refinishing like a total newbie. They are masters, but as i said on the other thread, it is part of the job and I personally would miss out on a lot of great info if it were on a separate page with my reading habits. I may have gone to "the business of upholstery" half a dozen times since I closed my shop. Seeing the cool projects people get to do on "the green room" just makes me want to die while I'm doing the mindless stuff I get for "work". I only read this page now.

Good point Steve about encouraging more woodworking involvement. I'm not sure we need to have another page for it though considering the volume of posts lately.

I have always just taken it for granted that wood working and refinishing were part and parcel of the business. Where I apprenticed we made our own frames, touched up any show wood ( after seeing some of Steve's work I wouldn't call it refinishing),etc.. I know that isn't one's experience. I work with a guy who had 5 years experience back in Jamaica who only recovered chairs. His sewing needed improvement, his woodworking has come along way and he now will take on things like snowmobile and tractor seats. But that has taken almost 2 years LOL
