Title: Winter Interiors
Post by: Peppy on January 15, 2011, 11:05:33 am
We've got a bunch of interiors this winter. I'll post them as they're done.

A 17' Searay

Looks good Peppy. I like the way you matched the seat to the diagonal back. Look forward to more pics.

I would feel good about putting my name on that work, too.  Looks nice!  :)

Thanks guys! Although Kodydog, I can't take much credit for the stripes lining up, I just copied Searay. And stood in the right place when I took the picture. But thanks!

Here's the rest done-

That was a good one. All plastic and unrotten wood. Amazing! Now we clear a path to the other building and get a couple more.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2Fth_P1240009.jpg&hash=89349a8cffd35cc3e73517169823adf9) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/?action=view&current=P1240009.jpg)

I'm almost done an older Doral Cavalier headliner, won't mean much to most here but it's like a 28'ish searay sundancer maybe. Or a Bayliner Ciera. Those pictures won't be very exciting. Hard to get good pics in a cuddy. Even harder in the aft cabin. 2 more Dorals to come in (smaller ones) and an older searay are up next. Almost half done the winter work! Which is good since a boat just came to the shop for a top, even in this weather! Spring rush starting early!

Yeah, Peppy, that's really nice work.

I break out in a sweat when seats like that come into the shop where I work.  (and it ain't a hot flash).

Thanks again guys! Bobbin, do you mean the pontoon seats? This is the 4th or 5th one I've done and the first one I haven't had to rebuild. It was all plastic. The rebuilding is usually the worst part. Aside from that it's fairly straight forward. I kind of like them now. Zip-ding. Cut 2 one mirror type thing. Maybe it's the mold your allergic to? haha. And hey, it's not a sweatshop if your not sweating!

Kodydog busy is good! Busiest winter yet! Bordering on over booked if you ask me. I think I have 5 left to go. Hope I can get them done before new work starts coming in!

Peppy,

Nice work, I especially like the pontoon seats.  Are the inside backs done separately?  I've never done any seats like that, but it looks like they may be installed multiple pieces.

I was looking at some of your pictures in photobucket and saw one that you were patterning a top.  You had a scale stretched out in the frame.  I'm sure it was to get your frame tension a certain way.  Could you explain?
Title: Re: Winter Interiors
Post by: Peppy on January 27, 2011, 06:05:41 pm
Thanks Bobby, ya the pontoon seats all come apart. The arms are separate and bolt to the seats, you get at the bolts through the cup holders on the arms. The backs are separate too and unscrew. The lower part of the back is a separate pad screwed to the back through the vinyl. Simple sections when it all comes apart.

Ya the straps and fish scale rig is something I've been doing for a while (almost 2 years?) It was a way I developed to 'scientifically' put tension on framework. I use two sets, driver and passenger side. The rig carries all the tension of the top and I use filament tape to hold the bars in place. It makes for easy adjustment of the bars under tension. Something thats hard to do using only tape. And you can see on the scale if the tension changes at any point. There was a thread about it,

Peppy, I work in a place with virtually no equipment and having no background in automotive upholstery or working with moulded seat forms and vinyls I cringe when they come into the shop.  Everything about them is hard for me and I always feel as though I'm playing "Beat the Clock" on top of it all.  I've gotten good results but have always labored under the feeling that it's taken way too long to achieve them.  I hate seeing that stuff come through the door.

I hear ya Bobbin. We might well work in the same shop! But my boss seems less like a dink. Well, lately. When I first started he was pretty dinkus. You said before he hates patterning? Well that can't help much. But these seats really aren't complex. I've done some that are tricky, bolsters and outside back being the same skin but these really are just simple geometric shapes that bolt together. The next one I rebuild I'll be copying this style. Does he upholster your skins?

Not a lot finished recently, several half done projects. Lots to show next week I hope. Here's a nice picture of the finished searay and poontang boat
(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P1250003.jpg&hash=ff3df1d5ca30107a1ef053f8ab98edf2) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P1250003.jpg)

Oh I guess I never put up a picture of the poontang's tarp, maybe later.

And another bucket seat, this from a cadorette cockpit interior that'll go together next week....if the extra vinyl ever arrives

The pontoon cover-
(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P1250002.jpg&hash=104bf6d8b9dfdaefbdf6f7bf2cb58311) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P1250002.jpg)

Now here's a tricky one-

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P1310005.jpg&hash=a4b599a631afc5d7f57e11b6e24b91a6) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P1310005.jpg)
One huge bag. Like a bayliner U-seat but a little worse. No stretchers/stays, the vinyl's all trampolining. A little ugly.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P1310006.jpg&hash=687e399633fa8c594ef2b459d4838021) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P1310006.jpg)
Starting over. New pattern, new design.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P2100006.jpg&hash=4fc9c94d8265b4a5264ea400df59ada9) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P2100006.jpg)
Oh boy! Can she sew! I probably took out as many staples as are in it right now. On again, off again, on again, I ripped a stretcher..... *sigh*

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P2100004.jpg&hash=b730cc1aaf89acf055337851a269eb54) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P2100004.jpg)
But it's done. Looks okay if I do say.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P2100007.jpg&hash=e4e30b76fb42d5e3bbd7206e8a640580) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P2100007.jpg)
Stretcher now in the inside arm.

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P2100008.jpg&hash=6ff3dcadd80370ec977a5085537cb338) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P2100008.jpg)
I'm pleased.

18' Doral sleeper seats.

Fancy shmancy finished product.

This boat's an upholsterer's dream. Or nightmare. Frikkin' Frenchies. Setting loose this upholstery on an unsuspecting world. Shoulda kept it in Quebec. Like this thing!

(https://forum.upholster.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1020.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faf328%2Fpeppypower%2FBoats%2Fth_P2160001.jpg&hash=72c3f69698622b1e1d8508520729a8d8) (http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af328/peppypower/Boats/?action=view&current=P2160001.jpg)
Thats all back-tacked. With a hole in the middle. On a flimsy piece of flopsy 3/8". Almost took as long to upholster as the 4 sleeper backs. I'm shocked I got it on the first attempt. *pats back* Now I've got to get it back in the boat. 1 bolt, 4 push plug dealies, and 6 screws. In this wee little pad. Frikken Frenchies....wait till you see the side pads...

Really nice looking work, Peppy.  Doral makes a quality boat IMHO and that vinyl work really sets it off.

Thanks June! I agree, Dorals are good boats. They used to make them nearby, I worked with a couple guys that worked there. That notwithstanding, they are well built boats. Just all that curvy shapey finicky whatsit. Sacra-blu!

And thank you too Exotic leather! Forgot to say that. ...

Well, another one done! Feels good after all that work laying around all winter to have it put away.
